Carnage Asada is an idea that grew from the very close friendship that L. Michael Haller enjoyed with the great Japanese actor, Shintaro Katsu, most famous for the unforgettable character that he created, Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman. Together, they often dreamed of finding a way to introduce this concept to the world audience. It is through breakthroughs in Virtual Reality that Mr. Haller has seen while producing hit video games for PlayStation and Xbox that this finally became possible.

About to pay the ultimate price for trying to escape the Nevada Debtor Prison and maiming the Commandant, Smith’s passionate defense by a young public defender, in her first major trial with the whole world watching, buys him one last chance at redemption. Breakthroughs in neurological experimentation create direct access to a patient’s Id. Advances in nanotechnology now allow the viewer to see what the patient is dreaming. The result is compelling Reality TV that has the whole world tuned in—the ultimate escape from the drudgery and hopelessness that awaits future society.

The scene is 17th Century Japan and the event is a budding border war between two despotic warlords. Cast into the middle of this castle intrigue is Mordecai Smith, a down on his luck former modern war hero, sentenced to pay off his debts in his own VR jail. Unknowingly joined by his prison buddy, the two must use all of their innate ingenuity—and occasional ruthlessness to survive. Broadcast by the newest Reality Channel, it plays like a video game, but to Smith and the Dark Ronin, it is very, very real!

In the Corporate Wars, Smith volunteered for many dangerous missions, and he would normally relish the chance to join such an experiment. However, the corporate leaders now controlling society are nothing if not vindictive. In their act of retribution for the money Smith has cost them, they condemn him to be sightless in this strange and exotic world of cherry blossoms and cruelty; castle royalty and cunning assassins. A Blindman, suddenly alone in the middle of a Samurai Civil War, his survival is very much in doubt—and irrelevant to his Masters.

But this is televised media after all, and ratings are everything. Designed to keep the masses docile, it has to entertain. They took his eyes, but they did give him a sword—and he knows how to use it.
