Chapter One"Well?" Sarah Hamilton demanded. Her words were a bit indistinct, coming as they did from somewhere in the region of her toes. "So, what do you think? Will this work?"
"I think there might be considerable trouble keeping ... uh ... the relevant body parts in required contact."
"Um, well you see, with the male anatomy in ... the proper operational condition, and the female anatomy in this position, there would be some danger of ... eh ... losing touch, so to speak." If his position had allowed, Jake would have patted himself on the shoulder for his brilliant way with words.
She scrambled off him and knelt on the bed while she scribbled his opinion on a pad.
"Is this an educated guess, or do you have actual experience?"
When he didn't answer, she glanced impatiently at him, and tapped his stomach with her pen. "Jake?"
Jake Benford sat up and pushed one hand through his mussed hair, wondering not for the first time, just how he had gotten himself into this situation. "That's an educated guess. I haven't dated a circus acrobat yet, but I'll be sure to update you on the subject if I do."
"Good," she said absentmindedly. She flipped her pad to a new page, stood up and moved to the small desk where half a dozen books lay open, displaying their colorful photographs and drawings. Jake rolled his eyes as she began studying the text. She wouldn't know sarcasm if it jumped up and bit her in the female anatomy.
It looked like his respite was over. She put the pen back behind her ear where it instantly tangled in her curly dark hair, and turned to him with a let's-get-back-to-work look on her face.
"Okay, let's try this. It looks easier. Stand over there."
Still marveling at the way he had allowed her to boss him around ever since she was two years old, he let himself be dragged to his feet. She pushed him against the wall, then stepped back, frowning. "Drat. Our sizes don't match. This will never work."
Jake folded his arms on his chest and continued standing where told to, while she walked back to the desk and put her glasses on to study the book better. "Right. I'm supposed to be against the wall and you are supposed to hold me up." Frowning, she looked at him, her gray eyes penetrating even through the distortion of the glasses. "Can you do that and still perform?"
"Of course," he said, almost affronted by her doubting tone.
"Mmm ... Let's try." She took his place by the wall and pulled him against her. "Okay, how does this work? Do you lift me up?"
Shaking his head in disbelief, Jake wrapped his arms around her and lifted her, then waited.
"Well? What are you waiting for?"
"Your next command, Highness."
"Haven't you done this before?"
He opened his mouth, then closed it again. "I'm not answering any more questions regarding my repertoire of sexual positions."
"Don't be such a prude, Jake. It will help if you can just tell me things instead of me having to look them up constantly. What am I supposed to do now?"
Jake rolled his eyes. "Just hold on. Wrap your arms and legs around me."
She did. "Now what?"
"A demonstration of what comes next would require that we take our clothes off."
"Ah. Okay." She moved experimentally. "Hmm, this doesn't seem very comfortable for either party. Okay, you can let me down now."
"Sex isn't always supposed to be comfortable."
She glanced at him with interest. "It's not? How so?"
Jake laughed incredulously and threw himself into a chair. "Sarah, wouldn't it be simpler if you just found yourself a boyfriend to experiment with?"
"Hey, stay there." Flipping the pages she scanned several pictures before bouncing into his lap, straddling him. "Stretch out your legs." Gingerly, she leaned back until she was lying upside down against his legs. "How about this?"
"Definite potential," he murmured, watching the sleek lines of her body and fighting back a response. "Worth a try." He pulled her back up. "Enough research, okay?"
"Already?" Her hands on his shoulders, she frowned. "There are at least a dozen more positions I'd like to try."
"Sorry, this guinea pig is worn out."
"So soon?" She shrugged and placed the pad against his chest. "Okay, I'll ask you some questions then." She got comfortable on his lap. To his dismay she obviously intended to stay put for a while. "How long does it take?"
With tortured amusement, Jake stared into her serious face. "All sorts of things. Use your imagination."
She pouted, but didn't pursue it. "Okay. What's your favorite position and why?"
He shook his head. "Sorry, that's privileged information."
Sarah climbed off his lap and stuffed the pad into the pocket of her cardigan. "I can't believe you're being so prudish, Jake," she said in annoyance. "Let me try just one more thing."
Jake gave up. Anything to get out of here and into a cold shower. Could she really be ignorant of the effect her research had on him? "Fine. Just one more and that's it. It's getting late, anyway. I have a flight to London first thing."
She pulled him to the bed and lay down. "I just want to see how the missionary position works. This shouldn't be too much work for you." She grabbed his hand and pulled until he practically fell on top of her. "Show me how you would move."
"No." She opened her mouth, but he stopped her words with a finger to her lips. "Call me a prude once more, Sarah, and I can't be held responsible for the consequences."
"Fine. I'll do the work then." He gritted his teeth as she moved inexpertly against him, then watched with resignation as her eyes widened in shock.
"Right," he admitted ruefully. "This is turning me on. Sorry."
He expected red-faced embarrassment, but she surprised him by smiling broadly. "This is amazing. I had no idea it was that easy to turn a boy on."
