These chapters first appeared, in similar versions, in The Phoenix, a daily newspaper in Pennsylvania, in my column, “Thinking Allowed.” Over the years, enough people have told me how much they enjoy the cat stories, so I’ve created this book featuring Tony (who died last fall), Blade, and Martha Washington (the cat, not the former first lady).

For ten years I was single and considered myself a junior “cat lady,” with two, and then three, cats. Some of the chapters reflect the difficulty of being outnumbered by furry felines. Then I married a wonder¬ful man who adopted the cats – hairballs, bad habits, and Al. Our adventures together, including moving to another state are seen through the eyes of the cats, and their perceptions are quite different from ours.

If you love cats, you will see your own happiness as well as frustration within these pages. And you will see your cats, for all cats arc related by some kind of mysterious brain thread that helps them annoy owners, non-cat-lovers, and the general public through a series of seemingly unknowing actions, mostly accomplished while taking naps. But don’t be fooled. They know exactly what they are doing.

I have no doubt that if all cat owners in a given neighborhood went on vacation at the same time, they would return to find their cats in complete control of the house, yard, and garage, including having some¬how learned to drive during the owners’ absence. The cats would have created an elaborate communica¬tion system, far beyond signaling to one another when they want the top of their head washed.

Meanwhile, let’s enjoy our cats, keep track of the neighbors’ vacation schedules, and generally just be very careful, lest we create a world where shedding on the sofa is considered an essential social grace.

About the Author

Tresita M Beach was a newspaper columnist for more than a decade and is the author of "Thinking (and Laughing) Allowed." She served United Methodist Churches as a pastor for a dozen years in Vermont and Pennsylvania, and is a self-avowed "cat lady." Despite her great love for cats, she tries to keep one foot this side of reality by admitting they are, after all, cats. For this reason, she never has philosophical discussions with them or tries to elicit their opinions on political matters.
