Celebrate 2000

Lounge music made a big comeback in the '90s, as the young, hip, martini-sipping set filled their CD shelves with retro delights (including some real treasures like Esquivel's SPACE AGE BACHELOR PAD MUSIC). CELEBRATE 2000 appears designed to appeal to this same crowd. At least that's what the artwork implies, with its stylish photos of women in cocktail dresses clinking glasses filled with brightly colored drinks. Actually, this collection of well-known waltzes makes a terrific party record. After all, the music of the Strauss family -- represented here by six selections -- is a hallowed New Year's tradition. Recorded in the late '50s and early '60s, these performances by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra are exceptionally opulent. Felix Slatkin (first violinist of the legendary Hollywood String Quartet and father of star conductor Leonard) leads lush, lilting performances of Strauss favorites like "The Blue Danube," "Tales of the Vienna Woods," and "Voices of Spring," as well as waltzes by Tchaikovsky, Offenbach, and Waldteufel. Pops maestro Carmen Dragon glides through silky smooth arrangements of two Chopin waltzes, while film composer Miklós Rózsa picks up the baton for Ivanovici's melodiously melancholy "Waves of the Danube." In concept, CELEBRATE 2000 may seem a bit gimmicky, but the music is timeless and the glittery sound is endearingly "hi-fi."
