The book entertains and impresses with its images but more importantly it creates an opportunity for a conversation between parents and children. The book opens the door to a discussion about what's really important amidst all of the fun and distractions that holidays can sometimes create.
Holidays clearly aren't the only opportunities to talk about gratitude but they're great milestones and I quickly realized I had been missing a key opportunity. The book includes 20 original entertaining poems and amazing illustrations. The poems flow in chronological holiday order through the year. I decided to incorporate black and white photographs into every page in order to provide a glimpse at the history. It was a real challenge coming up with images that made a point but did not distract from the illustrations. The combination of illustrations mixed with black and white photography has been a huge hit with children. It's different and they love it! I also included in the book a place for them to draw their favorite holiday, list holiday traditions, and list their favorite gifts (given and received!). Great way to personalize the book and a fun way to look back at previous years!
