Overview

Celtic Fire

Celtic Fire is a vibrant invitation to dance by Irish button accordion virtuoso John Whelan of Riverdance fame. Backed by a fine array of young musicians from the Celtic corners of America, Whelan creates a cheerful and earthy ambience that will inspire even barflies and wallflowers to some serious toe-tapping. His resume alone is a strong testament to his handiness with a tune: Whelan is a seven-time winner of the All-Ireland competition and cut his first album at a mere 14 years of age. His sense of the Irish folk tradition extends both backward and forward in time, from the older torchbearers of yesteryear to the bold innovations of players in the New World. Yet this is no neo-Celtic outing -- it's hard to tell whether "Have a Drink on Me" and "Widow Brady" were written last week or handed down from father to son for centuries. Most of the tunes here are Whelan's own compositions or arrangements, and he seems to have a penchant for tempos between fast and faster. (A notable exception: the lovely, timeless waltz "Father," written by Whelan "for [his] good friend Father Frank Hoffman.") This crack traditional band displays a clear sense of Whelan's virtuosity, as well as a bit of his contrariness, from the frantically unsentimental "Christmas Eve" to the Who-like guitar counterpoint in the down-home polka of "Dot's." Come gather 'round the fire.
