“Even if I wanted to comfort her I couldn’t. I didn’t know the first thing about what was going on. She wasn’t going to push me away this time because I wasn’t leaving until I got my answers. This time I’d fight for her.” Fear is very real and dangerous. It clings to vulnerability and weaknesses, providing the perfect opportunity for everlasting scars. Fear causes us to commit to unintelligible actions based on the unknown or even worse—past experiences. Hoddell shares an amazing fictional story with her readers, encompassing love, pain and fear of a relationship after a traumatic experience. This story is intriguing, compelling and emotionally heart-stopping. By reading the words that Hoddell writes in this first installment of the Chequered Flag Series, readers are able to experience the turmoil that is caused by reliving one painful experience, causing detrimental impact—given the inability to overcome the fear of its re-occurrence. Raine wakes up in a hospital, thankful that her two best friends are both there to support her. After much debate, it becomes apparent that Raine has been hunted down as a means to target someone else in the process. Raine’s irrational thoughts leave her with one ultimate conclusion—she is in the hospital because of her love for Teo. She has been with Teo for two years, but with his growing success as a racer, her life has been placed in danger. Her resolve is to end the relationship in order to prevent further attacks on her life, also an attempt for Teo’s. If he knew what transpired, landing her in the hospital broken and defenseless, he would never take the opportunity to live the life that he has strived so hard to build. After much debate and countless requests for reconsideration by both friends—Raine sends the text that will end it all…for an entire year. For more of this review, visit my website:
