Richard and Evan meet while Evan is planning Richard's brother's wedding. The attraction is strong on both sides. Evan assumes Richard is straight and so he figures there is no chance for them. Evan is in shock when the Christmas Eve wedding he has gone all out for is called off. Richard, brother to one of the grooms, suddenly kisses Evan and changes his perspective. They talk and learn they have little in common. Richard is feeling like this could be more than what they are making it out to be. Evan is trying to push him away and he wants to know why. Together, they are explosive. Such a sweet and quick read. I love the teasing and the sexy times are just HOT! Makes a great gift too! ***This ARC was given from Netgalley.com and its publisher, for an honest review only.
This story is a prequel to the Wicked Play series (all standalone, including this one) and is about an established couple that we see in that series. This is the story of how they met. Richard and Evan are clearly opposites, but as in many cases, opposites can definitely attract. Evan is a somewhat effiminate event planner, clearly out and proud of it, and why he's attracted to the groom's uptight but super sexy brother Richard is beyond him. But when the wedding gets called off at the last minute, Richard is the one who helps him change the disaster into a Christmas party instead, and not only that, clearly makes the case for wanting Evan in more than a let's be friends way. Will one night together be enough to scratch the itch they've been feeling for weeks? I loved this novella! It's not a kinky story, but it's super sexy as Richard finally makes a play for Evan. While Richard is conservative in his manner and approach to life, he's still gay, and Evan brings out his protective side, along with an intense sexual attraction. Evan on the other hand is a more stereotypical and flamboyant queer, and while he believes that Richard is interested in 'trying him out' he doesn't really think Richard is going to want more than one night. They share a steamy Christmas Eve together, and when Evan is ready to run in the morning, Richard is clear that he's interested in more. I really enjoyed the contrast between the characters and that the story was told from both points of view. Though it's a shorter novella, we get a happy ending with a sweet epilogue. 4.5 stars.
