Love this series.

Rafe is a wonderful hero. In the comic books he would be the sidekick. It was great to see him get the girl best for him.

Well written first 2/3rds Enjoyed set up of hero courting his dream woman when honor forces him to rescue heroine who is slandered by his dream woman, the villain of the story Good Subplot of hero possibly being illegitimate, his family is blond & beautiful He is an above average looking red head First love scene is well written however hero doesn't seem crazy about heroine until the last page Climax is him having to choose between pleasing his dream woman or his wife Not quite enough suspense at the end nor demonstration of hero's devotion to heroine

Having never read an Edith Layton book, but having heard about her from friends, I decided to give her a try. Rafe, a red-headed beta male pines for the most beautiful woman of the season, Annabelle. Only problem? She's still smarting from the man of her dreams marrying someone else. Suddenly, Annabelle has to move on, and much to Rafe's surprise, she seems interested in him. Enter, Brenna, his friend's sister who he unwittingly compromises. He does the honorable thing and offers marriage. Brenna knows she can never compare with the incomparable Annabelle, but all she needs is to know that isn't just a duty who took away Rafe's chance at happiness. Can Rafe see what's in front of him before it's too late? While I generally adore a great beta hero, there was just something lacking at the beginning. I would have preferred that the hero notice Bren on her own accord rather than being forced to notice her. For that reason alone, this book lost a star with me. Thankfully, the last 2/3 of this book was better than the beginning.

Lord Raphael Dalton successfully fought against Napoleon's elite soldiers. However, his campaign on English soil to gain the regard of Lady Annabelle Wylde seems hopeless, as she loves another, the now married Damon Ryder. Worse yet, Rafe knows he acts like a puppy panting for a minor sign of affection from Annabelle, but he is only one of several suitors.

However, Rafe's efforts to win Annabelle's heart abruptly end when he finds himself forced to marry his friend's sister Brenna Ford to save her reputation. Brenna loves Rafe and he enjoys being with her as she brings him happiness and a reason to live. Brenna hopes that one day she can eventually win his heart from Annabelle although she believes that feat is an impossible task especially since Annabelle has plans for Rafe.

Romance readers know that Edith Layton's 'C' novels (see THE CHALLENGE, THE CAD, and THE CHOICE) are A rated tales. Her latest 'C' book, THE CHANCE is an entertaining Regency romance that brings alive the lifestyle of the rich and famous in post-Napoleonic England. The story line is fun and well written, but it is the cleverly designed triangle that will leave the audience wanting more of Ms. Layton's emotionally packed novels.
