In Delhi, 11-year-old Chandra is delighted to be getting married; she is sure she'll be happy with the 16-year-old husband her father has chosen for her. After the wedding, she returns to school, while he goes home to finish his studies out in the desert state of Rajasthan. But when she goes to visit her in-laws, she is met with hatred, beatings and imprisonment. Her husband has just died, and Hindu tradition says that a widow must stay with her husband's family as a servant until she dies. Even if she runs away, her tamily will not take her in again. With the help of the Goddess Durga, and modern-minded friends of many castes, Chandra fights for her freedom.
