Overview

Sacred music became a widespread obsession for many listeners in the mid-'90s thanks to the overwhelming international success of Chant, the 1994 Angel reissue of recordings originally made in 1980-1981 that made stars of the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos. In 1995, Chant II was released as a follow-up album, though this time recordings of poorer quality from 1972 were used. While Gregorian chant had been a central part of Roman Catholic liturgical music for over a millennium, its rediscovery by a laity unfamiliar with sacred music seemed a part of a growing religious awareness. The audience for this music ranged from Christian traditionalists who sought music with a deep spiritual feeling to casual listeners who were attracted to any sort of soothing background music for reflection or meditation. The fact that Chant II was inferior in sound quality to its predecessor did little to hinder its sales, though a side-by-side comparison of the albums shows that the audio is more compressed here, and some tape hiss is still noticeable, despite a thorough digital mastering. The monks' singing is also different, due to greater space in the microphone placement, which lends the voices a distant quality.
