When Dr. Alex Murdock is demoted to a university in rural Virginia, the last thing he expects to find is a future. But country charm never looked as good as it did on Rainey Mitchell.

Rainey Mitchell does not need a high-class flirt in her wounded world, but trouble and temptation wafts off the new professor as strong as his sandalwood-scented cologne.

When circumstances thrust them together to save her tutoring clinic, can the troublemaker find the hero inside and encourage the reticent Rainey to open her heart again?

"Rainey Mitchell is doing just fine. She has a great job helping children in need, her family is around her, she is mother to a fabulous little girl, and is getting over the betrayal of her ex-husband. Dr. Alex Murdock is not doing so well, as he is forced to work at a rural university, his life is full of secrets surrounding his family, and he has to start over in a new town. Luckily, Rainey, the daughter of his landlord, is there to get him settled. Rainey just wants to stay away from the new professor, who has the same charm as her ex. Unfortunately, they seem to need each other. Rainey needs his grant-writing ability to save her program, and Alex is terrible at the lecturing at which Rainey excels. The two must work together to fulfill their goals, but will they be able to do it? Rainey's insecurities and Alex's obsession with protecting his family could be their undoing. A well-written love story filled with suspense, mystery, and a loving family." ~ Library Journal Review

Pepper Basham has created a community that I wish with all my heart I could hop on a plane and go visit! I would just LOVE to work in the kitchen for a day with Ma Mitchell, have Sunday dinner with the clan, submerge myself into the very midst of the Mitchell family....Why? Because the Mitchell family feels REAL. Not only do they have their share of faults and mistakes...But they have an open heart, a tenderness, a compassion, a LOVE for each other and those that God sends their way to melt even the sternest of misers...or troublemakers. Both Rainey and Alex have their fair share of hurts, betrayals, and sorrow. Howevers, their story is one that we would do well to learn from. Sometimes, God brings the most unlikely person into our lives who has all the appearances of being nothing but a troublemaker. However, that person can end up being the BEST person for us. The person we need in our lives NOW. Whether that is just for a season, or for the long haul. I truly believe that no relationship comes about by chance. God's hand is all over it from the beginning. Alex is SO Adorkable! Yet he is fiercely protective of those he loves. Rainey is a stubborn, and determined sort. Which means I can relate very well with her. I adore them all, and don't even get me started on all the adorable little ones running around!

Engaging. This is just one word that describes Pepper Basham’s latest release Charming the Troublemaker. Oh, I have plenty more adjectives, but this one goes first because from the start, I was engaged by the snappy dialogue, enthralled with the small town setting, and captivated by the dynamic characters. Not forgetting, this story is stamped with true Basham flair which is her unique and mesmerizing prose. Dr. Alex Murdock surprised me more than any other hero Pepper Basham penned. It’s the honest truth. We get a vague glimpse of him in the first book of the series, A Twist of Faith, but this troublemaker takes center stage in this hilarious, hard-to-put-down story. Layered. That’s been my word for Alex since his first interactions with the heroine, Rainey Mitchell, and her daughter, Sarah. On the surface, he appears arrogant and shallow, but he’s anything but! He’s protective, caring, generous, and just what Rainey’s cautious heart needs. His character unfolds scene by scene in some humorous and other times intriguing ways. Rainey Mitchell has been endeared to me since her appearance in A Twist of Faith. She’s a single mama, struggling to save her speech therapy facility while trying to maintain a stable life for her young daughter. Her previous marriage had left her self-image bruised and her heart guarded. Serious, responsible Rainey rebuffs any romantic relationship, especially if it involves flirty, super-swoony men. It was so much fun to read as Alex challenges her self-imposed defenses and awakens her heart to life and love. The sparks between these characters ignite the page, creating a fiery and fun romance. This story is equipped with stellar secondary characters like Ma Mitchell. She’s quick to listen, but doesn’t hold back her opinion which is always flavored with wisdom and love. Couple this with a gripping plot line and you have the makings of a five-star read! I feel it my duty to add a disclaimer. If by chance you’re out in public while reading this book, you may bust out laughing until tears gather in your eyes, and you may collect puzzled stares from those around you. Don’t ask me how I know this. In conclusion, Charming the Troublemaker has an incomparable lure which hooks your heart and infuses it with laughter, hope, and a beautiful thing called grace. *I was provided a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

Anyone who loves laughter, kisses, My Little Pony, kisses, awkward men who don't know what to do with themselves, kisses, and, oh, yeah, kisses, will love this story. Plus, Pepper continues to show her writing talent by including elements of mystery/suspense while maintaining her trademark romantic comedy. How can a book be a contemporary-romance-comedy-suspense you might ask? Trust me, just read it. I loved it so much that when I hit The End, I thought about starting it right over and reading it a second time, but then I decided that would probably be absurd. But I wanted to, and now I'm realizing how much I miss Alex, Rainey, and Sarah, and....(I'm posting now because I have to go read this again...peace out, ya'll). I have to tell you that that I received a copy of this book for promotional purposes, but all opinions are my own. Seriously. I might buy a few copies and force all of my family to unwrap them for Christmas because everyone should read it.

Charming the Troublemaker is a wonderful, sweet book that you will find yourself reading more than once. Pepper Basham has done it again!! Another great book that I know will be a bestseller. A Contemporary Romance novel that released on November 1, book 2 in the Mitchell's Crossroads series but it can be read as a stand-alone. About Dr. Alex Murdock, who has been demoted to a university in rural Virginia and the last thing he expects to find is a future. Rainey Mitchell doesn't need a high-class flirt in her wounded world, but the trouble and temptations are there! I don't want to give too much away about the story! So, I encourage you to get a copy today!! You will not be disappointed!! I received a copy of this book for free, a favorable review was not required. All opinions here are my own. I chose to write a positive review.

Charming the Troublemaker by award-winning author Pepper Basham is a delightful contemporary romance and is second in the Mitchell's Crossroads series. Not having previously read any books by this author, I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by this enjoyable and satisfactory read. The scenes were described in a manner that awakens the imagination, the characters are fleshed out well, with realistic emotions and reactions to situations and the thread of faith and family runs strong throughout the story. Several dramas are at play in the book, not the least being the relationship between Rainey and Alex. Rainey's love life is reeling from a husband's betrayal that led to divorce and the aftermath of negative words that cut her to the quick and reeked havoc on her self-image. Was she ready for another chance at love only to have her heart broken again? Alex, too, has a past that makes it difficult to be willing to open up to love again. He reluctantly moved to this town but soon found it to be a Hallmark experience but would he find it a place to belong? Some great action scenes, a few laugh out loud scenes and some, oh, so 'swoony' k-i-s-s-i-n-g scenes add up to a wonderful story full of family, faith, and love. I look forward to reading more from this author. I received a complimentary copy of this book via CelebrateLit. A favorable review was not required and opinions are my own. Pepper Basham has done it again. She created a book that makes you want to forget about doing anything until you can finish reading it. This is the second book in the Mitchell's Crossroads series. While you do not have to read the first one to understand this one, I am not sure you want to skip over it because it is so good. In this book, you have an #AdorkableAlex who seems so out of place in rural Virginia but fits right in. Rainey Mitchell is struggling with her ex-husband and trying to keep her tutoring clinic open. Alex has his own struggles as well. He has his own secrets surrounding his family that he is trying to keep to himself. Alex and Rainey have to come together to help each other. As they do, on my, the chemistry. Alex is a total flirt and Rainey is not a fan of his flirting ways. Yet the more they are together, the more swoony it becomes. There is a great incident involving Alex having some car troubles. This book has amazing characters, swoony moments, and a great story line. You are not going to regret reading it. Just make sure you don't have anywhere important to go or you might not make it there on time. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Where, oh where to begin? Pepper Basham’s books have become a go-to for me. Her pages are filled with laughter, sizzling chemistry, elements of faith, believable relationships, and settings that make you want to pack up and move. If you haven’t read A Twist of Faith, the first in this series, then it’s a must! This second book, Charming the Troublemaker continues on with secondary characters from the first novel and was so easy to fall in love with. Fans of contemporary Christian Romance will adore this charming story.

I cannot believe I have not read any of Pepper Basham's books until now. I am actually kicking myself for having missed all of her previous books (and must scramble to read all of them soon!). So many bloggers and reviewers have raved about Pepper's books and now I can be one of them. What a great story! Not only is it well-written, it's absolutely hilarious but so deep and thought-provoking at the same time. If you love contemporary rom-com but also love straight-forward spiritual truths wrapped up in an unforgettable small-town setting and family, you will totally fall in love with this book and the characters. I didn't read Twist of Faith (book 1 of the series) prior to reading this book but the author provided enough backstory to fill in the gaps and whet my appetite for the first book. Pepper is such a great story-teller. Her storyline is filled with twists and turns and there is even a bit of suspense in this book, which I was not expecting. The dialogue is extremely funny and some scenes, in their ridiculousness and hilarity (like the car stuck in mud scene), have branded themselves permanently into my memory. I actually cried from laughing so hard through these scenes! Pepper seamlessly weaves faith, prayer, and how to live out the faith into the storyline and the characters' development. Alex's moment with God on a mountaintop is tender and heart-stirringly poignant. And the characters...... I absolutely loved Mama Mitchell. I want to be her. This advice from her still rings in my ears - "God's placed him right here in my life and yours for such a time as this Don't waste His time with a stubborn heart." So powerful. Reese and Trigg, Rainey's older brothers, are quite fascinating. Reese is featured in the first book (which I must read) and I'm hoping that the next book will feature Trigg. Emma, Rainey's younger sister, is so much fun and full of life and laughter. I'm sure she'll get a book soon, too. Rainey.... Rainey. She's a broken woman, betrayed by her ex-husband and shattered by his neglect and verbal abuse that all she sees are her insecurities. She's intelligent, focused, and holds such a generous heart yet can't seem to be able to trust again to let that heart go free to love another. And Alex. He has layers and layers to his personality that we see slowly unwrapping as the story progresses. And wow, is he a swoon-worthy hero. He's appropriately dubbed "Adorakable Alex". He has a crazy, dorky, flirty sense of humor that keeps Rainey and the readers laughing out loud. Yet beneath the light-heartedness lies a deeply-feeling, tender, loyal heart and soul that crave for "a place to belong". He carries many regrets and feels like a failure but he wants to be Rainey's hero and tries so hard. And, boy, does he go through a spiritual and emotional growth spurt during the book! Alex learns about what real love is, what serving others looks like, and what forgiveness tastes like. This broken, selfish, arrogant troublemaker indeed becomes a hero. What an incredible and amazing journey this book was. And I can't wait for the next book in the series! I received a copy of the book through Celebrate Lit Tour. I was not required to give a favorable review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Since the very first book of this series, A Twist of Faith, I have been interested in Rainey’s story. Learning hers would be a “loose” retelling of North and South (Elizabeth Gaskell) AND that Rainey would be paired with Alex Murdock, an interesting if frustrating person in book 1, I was ecstatic!!! I mean, woohoo because I ❤ the book & miniseries, and anything Pepper writes is a #mustread, magical romance. While the humor is laugh-out-loud and the family drama endearing, a most intriguing new-to-Pepper’s-books element is present in Charming the Troublemaker: SUSPENSE! A few surprises and moments of suspense add a good measure of intensity to this Appalachian rom-com full of love and heart. The hero of this story has been dubbed #AdorkableAlex — and for good reason! His hilarity and flirty manner guards a humble heart that needs a little nudging to find an inner hero, and the people of Ransom, ESPECIALLY the Mitchells, are the ones to help him find that belonging. When he is determined to help or get involved in something, his whole heart jumps in, and it is just so endearing. And have I mentioned he likes Hallmark movies?! #swoon Rainey Mitchell is the kind of friend you want to have… fiercely protective and discerning, yet adorably clueless about her own value. Her independence is a contrast with some of the baggage and insecurities she carries, and her journey toward a new confidence is wonderfully spurred on by her friendship with Alex. Her little girl, Sarah, is cute from start to finish! And when Sarah and Alex are together on the page, it’s just precious. The swoony romance is “I NEED A FREEZER” level on multiple occasions! (Pepper has mad kissing book skills). Even through that, however, Alex is EVER the gentleman. And Rainey has a few surprises up her sleeve with her sassyness! Let’s just say it’s fun to see Rainey catch Alex off guard. More than the romance and the dynamic of these two lead characters, a strong theme of security, honesty, and life direction found ONLY IN JESUS centers this story as it winds its way toward a happy-ending. The emotional moments connected to this faith thread were the most joyous parts of the story. Mama Mitchell was often a tool of wisdom and grace for this purpose, and I just wanted to hug her. And eat her cookin’. There are so many little things to love about Charming the Troublemaker. Like the walkie talkies. And the kisses. And names of a sleek sports car and practical truck! (Marilyn and Indiana, respectively) And all the little North and South parallels you “have to look hard” for that added to the story in just the right ways. And the Mitchell clan with all their hometown love. This is one family I will happily revisit in these pages and, hopefully, in stories to come for a long while. Thank you to the author and publisher, Bling! Romance (LPC), for the complimentary review copy. This is my honest review.

Charming the Troublemaker, the second book in the “Mitchell’s Crossroads” series by Pepper Basham, is a delightfully enjoyable novel. Like its Appalachian Mountain setting, this novel abounds with a natural, creative beauty. Ms. Basham has a definitive talent for finding the multifaceted nature of life’s most ordinary moments. She is skilled at showing how humor, sincerity, and bittersweet can co-mingle in unexpected ways. At all times, this novel finds the perfect blend of comedy, romance, faith, and even a bit of suspense, making the story thoroughly readable and engaging. The characters are wonderfully well-developed and endearing. The plot is skillfully paced and truly entertaining. The enduring themes of trust and second chances are sincerely heart-felt and deeply inspiring. There is so much to love about this novel, and so I recommend it enthusiastically! I was given an early copy of this novel by the author/publisher. The review I have written, whether positive or negative, contains opinions that are entirely my own.

Once again, Pepper Basham had me laughing and tearing up with another adorable story in the Mitchell’s Crossroads series. I was delighted to be back in the Blue Ridge Mountains with the Mitchell family to watch Rainey’s story unfold. Only, it’s so much more than that. I fell in love with the whole cast of characters and wished for each of them a “Happily-Ever-After”. Rainey’s a mom on a mission, ambitious and strong. The handsome, new doctor in town quickly flips her world upside down. Awww, Alex. They’re both searching for happiness, purpose, and healing. Rainey is struggling to forgive her ex and afraid to open her heart to someone new. Alex carries his own baggage from the past, including a tense relationship with his father and shame over previous mistakes. They both long for a new beginning and “Charming the Troublemaker” is all about second chances. What’s not to love about that, right? If you’re new to this author’s work, you’ll undoubtedly be entertained by her witty dialogue, charming characters, and rich settings. There’s always a beautiful Spiritual message woven delicately throughout. And the romance will leave you blushing! I can’t wait to read her next book! I received a free copy from the author. No review, positive or otherwise, was required—all opinions are my own.

If you need a dose of good old-fashioned humor, “Charming the Troublemaker” is just the ticket. Book 2 of Pepper Basham’s “Mitchell’s Crossroads” series is filled with small town charm, the warm love of family, and lots of Appalachian humor combined, at times, with spiritual wisdom from the Matriarch of the family, Mama Mitchell. This is a fun Christian Romance novel, to which Ms. Basham also includes the element of suspense. I totally enjoyed the storyline and hope there will be future books in the series. *I received a complimentary copy for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this book since the minute I finished A Twist of Faith, the first book in Pepper Basham’s Mitchell’s Crossroad series. What a treat to read Rainey and Alex’s story! I wasn’t sure how the author was going to turn Alex into a totally lovable character, but she certainly managed it, and Rainey is a fantastic, independent heroine. From the small town setting to the vibrant, endearing characters, this book captured my interest immediately. Humor, romance, suspense, inspiration, hope—there’s a little bit of everything here. Read it and enjoy! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. All opinions are my own.

Charming the Troublemaker is the second installment from Pepper D Basham's fabulous series, Mitchell's Crossroads. Pepper is among my "must read authors" and this book does not disappoint. I felt connected to Rainey from the start. I understood her trying to move from betrayal and learning how to trust again. I loved how she interacted with Alex. I just could feel the chemistry between those two from the start. There is quite a few moments that I literally laughed out loud. Such a fun read. Charming the Troublemaker is most definitely a must read and I highly recommend it. 100 stars. I received this book from the author, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

While this is the second in her Mitchell's Crossroads series, you can read it as a stand-alone. Though don't be surprised if you wind up snapping up book number one if you haven't already. The Mitchell family is one you'll love getting to know. Let's start by acknowledging that Basham uses classics as the base for her contemporary romance novels. She spins an Appalachian twist on them and ushers them into the twenty-first century in a way that still maintains their classic beauty while also making them all her own. So while there's echoes of classic romance in them, the reader is treated with a beautiful story in Basham's incredibly romantic and fresh voice. Charming the Troublemaker is no different! Rainey and Alex are quite a pair with enough of their own hurts and hang-ups to prevent an easy path to their happily ever after. Still, they handle them like adults and with growth all along the way. Simple misunderstandings don't become large stumbling blocks, but rather they provide ways for each character to step forward and shed their past while being so incredibly relatable. Alex and Rainey are far from perfect, but they make perfect progress together:) And oh, does Basham do swoon-worthy for her romance. She's not shy in writing her love stories but rather embraces the genre, diving full-force into it while maintaining clean lines. So if you love a heart-fluttering romance where the characters have chemistry yet restraint, Basham's books are for you. ***I received a complimentary copy of this book but was under no requirements to post a review.

I honestly don't know where to start in this review! It seems pretty obvious from the 5 start rating that I really enjoyed the book, which I did! Loved it! Alex & Rainey are like my new book besties and I wouldn't want it any other way. I'll admit that I identified more in Alex's character than Rainey's, which I loved! There were so many light bulb moments as I was reading that gave me personal insight into why some people act the way they do. What I love most about reading fiction, and most especially Pepper's books, is that they give me a chance to practice communicating with other people with the benefit of knowing the behind the scenes motivations. Why should you read this book? 1) It's funny. I would be reading to myself and then laughing out loud --I read everywhere I go so imagine laugh out loud scenes while on the public bus or in lecture when you should be listening to the teacher. 2) It's honest. The dialogue and scenes are so realistic and completely believable. No fairyland lives here. 3) It's a kissing book. Closets have never looked so good. So buy the book. Read it. Then buy the book for a friend or 20 :)

I LOVE this book! Pepper Basham has become a go-to author for me. In this book you find two people with very guarded hearts, cautiously chipping away at each other's walls. Learning to trust and love again. I'll share a couple of highlights with you. Rainey, "Who was this guy? So arrogant and yet quick to beat up himself? Such a sweetheart to her little daughter? She was beginning to find this anomaly much too intriguing for her own good." Alex, "She laughed. Loudly and freely. He'd only heard it once before but he wanted to hear the sound again and again. " This book is full of family love, romance, a bit of suspense, and fun. I have laughed and cried with the people contained within these pages. I feel as if I know each person. I love Mama Mitchell and her ability to see what each person needs. I want to sit in her kitchen and talk with her. This is the second book in the series, I think it could be read as a stand-alone, but why would anyone want to do that? You will want to read A Twist of Faith for a proper introduction to the Mitchell family. I highly recommend this fun, loving, Faith-filled book

On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, Charming the Troublemaker by Pepper D. Basham is a Dirt Cake Brownie Trifle. Layered chocolate pudding, whipped cream, brownies, crumpled cookies make a mess of deliciousness. The gummy worms wiggling across the top seal the deal of fun. [free copy receive. opinions my own] Rainey, single mother of Sarah, has no time for men, especially smarmy-charm-y men like Dr. Alex Murdock. From all appearances, he's just like Rainey's cheating, secret-keeping ex-husband. Just when Rainey's certain that she's figured out Alex Murdock, he shows that all her assumptions about him were wrong. But, he's keeping a secret, too. Will this secret push them apart? Pepper Basham delights again with book #2 of Mitchell's Crossroads. My impressions of Alex Murdock from book #1 were not good, but Pepper Basham flipped those thoughts right over. And that hashtag #adorkablealex floating around? Yeah, it's true. I didn't think Alex would be such an adorable dork, but he really was. Also, I want to say that both Rainey and Alex did their fair share of saving each other. Rainey fought for herself, too. I loved watching this couple navigate mudslides, scary fathers, and little daughters. If you're looking for an darling romance with strong characters and hilarious moments, Charming the Troublemaker needs a place on your bookshelf.

Speech pathologist Rainey Mitchell is getting over the betrayal of her ex husband and raising her small daughter. Teaching at risk students in a small Appalachian college is her heart. Dr. Alex Murdock has been sent to this small college, but wishes to be elsewhere. Dr. Murdock is also a man of secrets. He is also a charmer and a flirt. Rainey wants no part of him. But sometimes God has plans for our lives that bear no resemblance to what we want. Trusting Him to bring His will to fruition in our lives is sometimes very difficult, though. Pepper Basham has written a solid second novel in her Mitchell's Crossroads series. Her characters seemingly leap off the pages from the start and dive down deep into the reader's heart. The witty banter between Rainey and Alex brought many a smile to my face during the reading. The entire Mitchell family, in fact, have gotten down deep in my heart and I certainly hope we hear from the remaining ones. And the swoon factor here is just gravy. Loved every minute! *I was given a preview copy of this book. My opinion is entirely my own.

Pepper Bashan took me on a delightful moving adventure from mistrust, doubt, and guilt to a wonderful happily-ever-after. There are unexpected plot twists and opportunities for the hero and heroine to rescue each other from internal and external danger. I love two unlikely characters getting together once the layers of first impressions are stripped away and the true gold beneath comes through. Great story. So glad I added it to my to-be-read list. I’ll be reading more of Pepper’s books in the future.

Author Pepper Basham adeptly weaves a story about the Mitchell's. The characters are so realistic and filled with personality you'd like to sit with some of them over a glass of tea and talk. As Rainey Mitchell becomes well-acquainted with Alex Murdoch you come to care about these characters and their well being. There are lines in the story which make you laugh out loud, others that make your heart race with romantic clean-reading scenes and some with the interwoven mystery. This is my first Pepper Basham book to read, it's fast-paced and utterly delightful. I'll be recommending this book to other people and increasing my own personal library with her other books.

I love a good love story, don’t you? Even if you agree with me, though, we could have two very different ideas in mind. How do you define a good love story? Do you look for witty banter between the characters and lots of physical attraction and “kissy scenes”? Or do you prefer deeper characters who, while attracted to each other, focus on the character struggles and heart more than the heat? Charming the Troublemaker fits the bill for the first kind of love story. Fun characters, humorous dialogue (countered with sage advice from Mama Mitchell), and a sweet little girl combine to create a light-hearted romance. And don’t forget plenty of kissy scenes! The story is well-written (and Sarah is precious!), but lately I have preferred books with more depth to them. If that’s what you’re looking for, too, this one may disappoint you. Not because it’s a bad story but because it’s a light, fun story instead. If you’re looking for something funny that would allow you to simply escape for a while, Charming the Troublemaker may just have the troublemaking fun you’re craving. (I received a complimentary copy of this novel. The thoughts expressed here are entirely my own.)
