Silk does a masterful job of creating complex, realistic characters, true-to-life dialogue, riveting plot lines, a setting and a world fit for each story, and keeping the stories punchy. Most if not all of Silk's stories carry a theme of an overarching and universal aspect of human motivation, such as remorse ("Repentance") and fear ("Ensenada") and reverence ("The River's End"). The theme comes out in the course of the story and brings a greater understanding of humanity to the reader. Silk offers a variety of genres and in doing so gives one more reason for the reader to maintain his or her interest throughout the collection. "In Memory" carries with it suspense and science fiction, "Freddie Fernwood" brings romance, and so on. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to immerse his- or herself in a work of literature.
