About the Author

Brinda Berry lives in the southern US with her family and two spunky cairn terriers. She's terribly fond of chocolate, coffee, and books that take her away from reality. She doesn't mind being called a geek or "crazy dog lady". When she's not working the day job or writing a novel, she's guilty of surfing the internet for no good reason.

*I rated this book 4.5 stars but when leaving a review at sites such as Goodreads, Amazon, etc…I round up to the next highest star! Not too long ago I got CHASING LUCK over on Amazon. I thought I better get a jump on reading it since I would be hosting Berry in an author signing this coming weekend. And let me tell you, from the start I was intrigued and didn't want to put the book down. So I read and I read and I devoured. This storyline had me sucked in; contemplating whether or not the supernatural was crossing over into this suspenseful romantic read. Was it? Read and discover for yourself. Now I say it is a romantic read, but a lot of the romance comes later. Of course there is the internal bickering each of the characters has with themselves. Especially Ace. He is tormented about his feelings for Malerie and the job he is hired to do. But the romance was perfectly paced and I was ready for it when it’s time to shine came up. And I must admit, it was nicely done. Could I relate to the characters? Not really. Both have pasts that affect their present. And it wasn't relatable to me. But I still felt for them, mainly Malerie. So much happens to her in her short life you can't help by feel for her. Really happy I gave this book a go and found a new author that I will happily read her other works. Definitely hope you give CHASING LUCK a chance and check out this unique storyline. 4.5 Stars!!

When Malerie was only seven-years-old the office building her mom worked in was bombed. Malerie was the sole survivor, but losing her mom and being trapped in the rubble has left her with PTSD and some major trust issues. At eighteen, Malerie has only ever trusted her uncle. But when fate steps in, she finds herself thrust into the capable hands of Ace. While acting as Malerie's body guard, Ace finds himself struggling to overcome his own trust issues. This was the first book I've read by Brinda Berry, but if the opportunity arose, I wouldn't be opposed to reading more. I had no problem staying invested in the story. There was just enough mystery to keep me wondering, and Ace was both sexy and honorable at the same time. While I often have a difficult time getting through contemporary books without getting bored, I didn't struggle even a little with this one. Saying all that, this story wasn't without issues. There were times when the dialog felt stiff and fake, the action was occasionally rushed and confusing, and Malerie herself was a bit all over the place. Despite that, I didn't walk away from the book feeling like I'd wasted my time. Overall it was well-written and enjoyable, and a nice easy read to pass a rainy day. ***I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I knew from the first page that this was going to be a book I would really enjoy. From the get-go, the writing style was fresh, mysterious and the narrative voice was strong. However as the story continued, I became more and more intrigued, excited and nervous of the fate of the characters I had come to care for so deeply. ‘Chasing Luck’ was a suspenseful and exciting read. Malerie was a fantastic heroine, who I loved to see grow throughout the novel, she had some issues which were justifiable but she tried her hardest to break out of her comfort zone as her possible fate began to hang over her like a black cloud. Ace was a character that I really connected with. There was something mysterious about him that I really liked, and made the relationship between him and Malerie really great to read as he started to open up to her. He was such a kind-hearted guy who tried to hide behind sarcasm, so I really enjoyed reading chapters from his point of view because it showed another side to Ace than the side that he felt he needed to show Malerie at the start of the book. Ace and Malerie’s slow burning romance was one of my favourite things about this book, as I loved the chemistry they had from the start when they meet just before a shooting that sets Malerie’s unsolved mystery in motion. I loved how Brinda Berry very subtly and cleverly entwined Malerie’s past, present and future, giving us little details and snippets at a time so that the suspense and mystery build to a pulse-pounding finale. The suspense in this story made it stand out amongst the many other books I have read in the New Adult genre, as it felt like an exciting adventure to read rather than just simply a good story. It was brilliantly paced, and the story wasn’t too much driven by the outside forces, but by the characters and their need to solve the mystery and protect those they love. This was a stunning novel which I know I will return to re-read in the future. This is one of my top reads of 2014 so far, so I give it 5 stars and a definite recommended read. 18-year old Malerie is celebrating her birthday with a BANG—literally! A gunman shows up at her birthday dinner and kills her uncle. What a shock! Ace is a struggling contractor trying to make ends meet and somehow he finds himself in the chaos of the restaurant shoot-out and saves Malerie. Malerie is sick and tired of being called “lucky” because “lucky people don’t walk around waiting for the next horrible thing to happen,” which is all she seems to be doing, ever since a bomb killed her mother many years ago. From then on, Malerie turns into a cold, somber, menacing shrew. Who can blame her? Nothing kills your confidence more than when someone needs to bathe you. But, of course, she begins to soften when Ace gets hired to install security in her big mansion, eventually becoming her bodyguard—her babysitter, it would seem. I could see how Ace would resent having to watch over a spoiled, rich, little princess. This is just like The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, except Whitney is a medicated and paranoid psycho. Or is she? Apparently her life really is in danger. How else would you explain all the recent close calls? But who wants to kill her? Then the story unveils a hidden mass of Chinese hieroglyphic computer codes outlining a series of numbers—a mystery that dates back to the day her mother died. The numbers reveal specific dates and coordinates, giving Malerie and Ace the clues to follow and figure it all out before something bad happens. Is Malerie’s death prophesized by fate? And how will they save her? An engaging mystery, romance thriller!
