Description: This is a reprint of the esophageal section of the third edition of Chassin's Operative Strategy in General Surgery: An Expositive Atlas (Springer, 2001). It is focused entirely on esophageal diseases since esophageal surgery has become much more of a specialty of its own.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a collection of esophageal procedures that encompass the entire practice of esophageal surgery.
Audience: Surgeons and residents practicing esophageal surgery are the intended audience.
Features: Each of the 14 chapters covers an established esophageal procedure that is either currently in use or was in use in the past as an accepted procedure. The procedures that are no longer used are defined as legacy procedures. In addition to the standard operative procedures on the esophagus, there are also chapters on basic concepts of esophageal surgery, exposure of the esophagus, esophageal perforation and managing anastomotic leaks. Each chapter begins with indications in the preoperative preparation of a patient with a particular disease. The operative strategies are discussed in detail and are followed by specific techniques used to perform the procedure. Many line drawings are used throughout. A portion of each chapter is devoted to pitfalls and danger points in the procedure as well as a discussion of the complications of each procedure. At the end of the chapter is an extensive list of references.
Assessment: This is a well designed book with many outstanding drawings. The drawings are of such high quality that a surgeon with less knowledge in esophageal surgery can understand the procedures very well. This results in a truly excellent text on esophageal technique. The inclusion of legacy procedures is very useful from both a historical standpoint as well as an understanding of the progression of the specialty to its current state. Anyone who reads or uses this book will have a superb understanding of esophageal disease from the surgical point of view.
