Checkmate: This is War is book 1 in the enemies-to-lovers romance duet that'll have you crying with laughter one moment and screaming in frustration the next—but you'll be begging to play the game with The King.
Game on.

Travis King is the worst kind of a**hole.
He taunts me for being a good girl and mocks my high standards.
He's cruel, crass, and has enough confidence to last two lifetimes.
And I hate him.

It wouldn't matter so much if he were avoidable.
But considering he's my older brother's best friend and roommate, I see him more than I'd ever want to.
His sculpted abs and gorgeous eyes are wasted on such an arrogant man, which makes me hate him even more.

Even though I've had a crush on him since I was ten, the feelings weren't mutual and he's made that very clear.
He's always loved getting under my skin and one night against my better judgment, I let him in my bed.
I've succumbed to his manw**re ways, but that doesn't change a thing.

Because the King is about to get played at his own game—and lose.

I went back and forth on how to rate this one. I absolutely loved some parts and some things drove me nuts. I love a good enemies to lovers, but the enemies part of this kind of went on for a little longer than I felt was necessary. It did seem to drag in some parts. I did love Travis and Viola so I will be reading the second book, I care about their HEA! This does end with a cliffy. I listened to the audio version of this book and it was fantastic! I know 3 stars may seem like I didn’t like this, but that’s not true. I recommend reading this, you will love Travis and Viola and the side characters!

I just couldn't get passed all the yelling and bickering at the beginning... it's a lot and very childish. So I ended up skimming the entire thing. While there were very ridiculous situations there were a couple moments that made it worth the skim. The characters are in their early 20's, so maybe their ages mixed with some of those ridiculous situations made the story unrelatable/unbelievable for me. Definitely didn't like how much Travis got around. The book ended in an unnecessary cliffhanger. There is no reason this needed to be extended into another book.

I really appreciate a free book, especially if it's the start of a series. That way, if turns out to be awful, you haven't wasted your money. But this turned out to be a really good story. I realize the free book #1 at the start of a series is a marketing trick, but it works for me. I couldn't wait to buy book #2. This first part was good, even though I gritted my teeth every time Travis opened his mouth or did something stupid. But when you realize why he is the way he is, it all makes sense. Thank you again for the free book, and thanks for continuing this in a duet instead of a trilogy. I'm just glad I discovered this series AFTER it was all published so I did not have to wait! I'm already on the Drew and Courtney duet, also already fully published. And thanks for all the HP references. I'm a book geek too (and retired English teacher) & absolutely LOVE HP!!

Have you ever had a book that just left you speechless and stunned that you sat and kept reading that last page to not only make sure you read it right but possibly thinking if you read it again it might change? Well this book did that to me. The fuel these two characters have is not only on page but it leapt off the page. I loved Travis and Viola. What was between them was raw and pure. This is one of those books that the hostility between them felt real and honest. This book was...well there's no words. I am still sitting here stunned with that ending. I can not wait for book two. Great, incredible and fantastic read. I could not put this down.

Travis King was a manwhore all the way through and through but when it comes to Viola Fisher his best friends sister his mind and body think other wise. When Viola and Travis were kids living across the street from one another they had a special bond that no one understood. But when there is a misunderstanding or shall I say when one ease drops on a conservation that all turns to HATE !! Can these two individuals live together for 2 weeks in the same house without killing each other 9 years later ..... OR ...... will the love they have for each other still be buried to deep to come to the surface ?? The banter between these two is funny...whittey...and at times down right MEAN !! This is a fast pass up down kind of story that leaves you hanging !! Can't wait to see what happens.....

It's been a long time since I've been left with a jaw dropping cliffhanger. I need book 2 NOW! My mind is going crazy with scenarios and I can't wait to see what KF has in store for the conclusion of this series. I was so enthralled with Travis and Viola's story that I forgot it was a duet and was freaking out because there wasn't enough time left in the book for me to be satisfied with it ending. This is more than a "forbidden fruit" or a "brothers BFF" story. For me what sets it apart from others is that Viola and Travis had a connect when they were kids. We also got flashbacks to that time so we could feel it and it wasn't just inferred. It wasn't just her falling for her brothers best friend. Watching them tear each other apart as adults was so funny. Always one upping the other. I though it was a bit long before the reveal of why their relationship hd ended but once I realized there was a second book it made more sense

Batten down the hatches, a fight is brewing! Viola and Travis are explosive. They met as kids and become friends but as teenagers something changed and now they hate each other. It doesn’t help that Travis is best friends with Drew, Viola’s brother, so he has said that Travis must keep his hands off Viola. The problem is, Travis loves Viola but she hates him. Viola loved Travis until he crushed her when she was 13, now she avoids him when she can or taunts him all the other times. The banter and maneuvers between Travis and Viola are off the charts – sometimes almost too harsh – but it fits with how they are fighting what the really feel based on what they believe the other person feels. When they end up together for 2 weeks in the same house, well, will the hatred continue or will the truth come out? Truly an incredible ride that was completely unexpected to me. But boy, watch out for that cliff hanger.

Wow! That pretty much sums up this book. I was hooked from the first page. The synopsis intrigued me and I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book and wow! it did not disappoint. Travis and Viola are like fire and gasoline. Their passion, anger, chemistry, and attitude make for one hell of a read. This book is funny, witty and smoking hot! I don't know too many couples who could put each other through what these two do and survive to tell the tale. I was surprised sparks were not leaping off my tablet screen. Needless to repeat, I loved this book. I'm impatiently and anxiously awaiting book 2. Kennedy Fox's writing is on point! She does a wonderful job of telling the story from both sides, giving the reader a glimpse into both Travis and Viola's minds as their relationship reaches its boiling point. **ARC provided in exchange for an honest review

I'm having trouble getting into this book. I think I'm in a reading funk, so I set this book aside. Hopefully in a week or so I can get into it
