Chapter One

Even Count Flat Peyote Bead Stitch

INSTRUCTIONS

by Eileen Knight

If you have never peyote beaded before, the following instructions, illustrations and pictures will enable you to pick up one of my patterns and create your own cherished project.

In each project you will find two types of pattern instructions and a colored image. The colored image is of the completed beaded panel. The pattern instructions are provided in graph form and placed adjacent the colored image and are also followed by row-by-row bead quantity and color placement instructions. For the projects that require assembly, each is provided with a colored image of the completed project along with written instructions on how to assemble.

When you look at the written row-by-row instructions the rows are shown as LS and HS. 'LS' is short for 'LOW SIDE' and 'HS' is short for' HIGH SIDE'. When reading the row-by-row instructions, you read all lines from left to right. The numeric portion represents the quantity of beads and the alphabet portion represents the color of the beads. In the example shown, HS Row 2 is telling you to peyote 1 only Black (B) bead and 10 only Turquoise (D) beads and in that order. Each time you finish a row, simply flip the row of beads between your fingers so that what was the end of the row and at the bottom of the row you were working on, is now the beginning of the next row you are starting on and the last bead of the row you were on is now at the top.

The panel in this practice run only has a few rows so that you can see how to peyote and how to decrease and understand how to read the graphs and apply the same principles to each of my patterns. The rows are also colored to help you distinguish one from the other.

Once you get past the initial clumsiness of holding the first 3 or 4 rows of beads, your work starts to take form and is easier to hold! It is a good habit to '√' the row you are on with a pencil to help keep track which row you are on.

You want to always be working towards your belly (from top to bottom). Each time you finish a row, simply flip the row of beads between your fingers so that what was the end of the row and at the bottom of the row you were working on, is now the beginning of the next row you are starting on and at the top.

In order to show the direction of the thread and the manner in which the beads are to fall into place, all of the following illustrations are shown with spaces between the beads, the beads are numbered and each row is a single color. The finished project should have no spaces as you would be gently snugging your beads together as you are adding them!

When you look at the panel graph, you will see a LOW SIDE and a HIGH SIDE. When reading the panel graph all LOW SIDE Rows are read from the Low Side to the High Side and all HIGH SIDE Rows are read from the High Side to the Low Side, with the exception of LS Row 1 and HS Row 1.

To begin, attach a 'stopper bead' to your thread by looping through the bead twice. A bead of a different color than the first rows acts as a quick reference point for the Low Side of your panel. This also prevents your beads from sliding off the thread. Leave an approximate 6 inch tail as this will be woven into the piece you are working on later.

Once your stopper bead is in place, begin to read the graph pattern from the "Low Side" (LS) to "High Side" (HS).

LS Row 1 and HS Row 1 are always to be read as one row! Now string on together all the beads for the LS Row 1 and HS Row 1 of your pattern, as shown in following detail. I have numbered the beads and used the color orange so that you can see how they are falling into place.

When starting peyote beading, I have always told my students to hold the string of beads for Low Side (LS) Row 1 & High Side (HS) Row 1 with the 'stopper bead' at the bottom so that you are holding your beads vertically.

To start HS Row 2, remembering to read the graph from the High Side to the Low Side, pick up the bead #23, separate bead #21 and bead #22 slightly, and thread through bead #21, then gently snug the beads together, as shown in following detail with the green beads.

Then pick up bead #24, skip bead #20, gently separate beads #19 and #20 and then thread through bead #19. Keep the tension snug enough but not so tight as to make the work too stiff. Then pick up bead #25, skip bead #18, gently separate beads #17 and #18 and go through bead #17 and so on, as shown in the following detail. Do not go through the 'stopper bead'. Gently snug the beads together!

Once you have completed HS Row 2, flip your beads so that what was the end of your row is now the beginning of the next row, LS Row 2.

To begin LS Row 2, now reading the graph now from the Low Side to the High Side, pick up bead #34 and go through the last bead in the previous row bead #33 as shown in the below pictorial with the yellow beads. Then pick up bead #35 and go through bead #32. Continue in this manner until you have reached the end of your row. Gently snug the beads together!

Once you have completed LS Row 2, flip your beads so that what was the end of your row is now the beginning of the next row, HS Row 3.

Then read the graph pattern from the High Side to the Low Side for HS Row 3. Pick up bead #45 and go through the last bead in the previous row bead #44 as shown in the below with the blue beads. Now pick up bead #46 and go through bead #43. Continue across the row accordingly. Gently snug the beads together!

Once you have completed HS Row 3, flip your beads so that what was the end of your row is now the beginning of the next row, LS Row 3.

Then read the graph from the Low Side to the High Side for LS Row 3. Pick up bead #56 and go through the last bead in the previous row bead #55 as shown in the following with the red beads. Then pick up bead #57 and go through bead #54. Continue across in this manner until you have reached the end of your row. Gently snug the beads together!

You will notice that HS Row 4 does not start the same as HS Row 3. It is always better to decrease at the end of a row! Thus, in this case, decrease at the end of LS Row 3. To decrease as shown in the below example, with your thread already exiting through bead #45 in HS Row 3 when you completed LS Row 3, thread up through bead #23 in HS Row 2 towards the panel, then back down through bead #66 in LS Row 3 towards the panel.

You are now ready to begin HS Row 4. Pick up bead #67 and thread through bead #65 as shown in the following example with brown beads, and continue across as previously shown to complete LS Row 2.

Remembering to always decrease at the end of the row, with bead #76 being the last bead in HS Row 4 and your thread already exiting through bead #56 in LS Row 3, thread back up through bead #34 in LS Row 2, towards the panel then back down through bead #76 in HS Row 4 towards the panel. See the following example.

You are now ready to start LS Row 4. All remaining rows would be peyoted as you practiced in HS Row 4 and LS Row 3 until the panel is completed.

Apply all the same principles, changing the color of the beads as dictated in my patterns.

If you find it difficult to read a graph pattern, you can use the row-by-row bead quantity and color placement instructions.

Did you know that to some people, shopping is considered a recreational activity? Did you know that it has been said, that in New York women purchase 80% of all consumer goods? Lady's Clothing Ornament is for the recreational side of your Lady Shopper!

COLORS:

DB353 Beige, DB42 Gold, DB791 Red, DB691 Green, DB160 Yellow, DB661 Purple

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Start each panel with approx. 8 feet of waxed Nymo size "B" thread. Before proceeding, wax your thread with "Thread Heaven" or "beeswax".

2. Add a stop bead, and leave a 6" tail.

3. It is important to note and remember that there is a Low Side (LS) and a High Side (HS) of each panel, making each row simple to follow. String on 22 Gold beads for LS Row 1 HS Row 1 and follow the instructions for Even Count Flat Peyote stitch. Weave the whole panel by following the written panel or graph instructions.

4. Remove the stop bead and weave in the 6" tail you left at the beginning of your panel. Connect the panels and add the netted top as detailed under the following instructions. Add dangles at the point of each panel when completing LS Row 37. This is a fantastic way to use up some of those old necklaces that are kicking around. Make the ornament your own and use your imagination!

If you do not have enough thread, you can add more by weaving new thread in the panel to start anew or continue. Remember to wax your thread!

CONNECTING the PANELS:

1. Starting with Panel One, position the panels face up in a circle with the points to the outside. Be sure the Low Side bead is the first bead on the top left and the High Side bead is on the top right of each panel.

2. Start with 6 feet of waxed thread. Pick up Panel One and sew through a few rows to secure the thread, exiting the High Side Row 2 Beige bead with the needle facing away from the panel. Now slip the needle into the top High Side Row 1 Gold bead facing the panel and peyote a row of 5 Beige beads, 1 Purple bead, 5 Beige beads across the top of the panel.

Pick up Panel Two, and enter the top High Side Row 1 Gold bead then peyote across until another 5 Beige beads, 1 Purple bead, 5 Beige beads has been added.

Repeat around for 3rd 4th 5th and 6th panels.

3. Join them together by slipping your needle into the top of the 1st panel's High Side Gold bead. Weave your thread to secure it, and then weave your thread all the way around the top of the panels back to the top High Side bead of the 1st panel to reinforce the top. Then redirect your thread back through the 1st panel's High Side Purple bead.

Do not clip your thread as you will use it to begin the netting.

NETTED TOP:

Drape the assembled panels over an old ornament. Use an old ornament for adding the netting as the needle will scratch the surface of the ornament. Also place a mug or drinking glass under the ornament so you do not have to hold it all the time. The key to creating the 'well-fitted' netting is to hold the completed panels snug over the ornament as to not pull the netting threads too tight as you work.

Begin with the thread you left exiting the top High Side Purple bead of Panel One.

To begin the 1st row of netting, * string 9 Purple beads, 1 Red bead and 9 Purple beads on. Moving to the left on the panel and pass your needle through the center high Purple bead. Then again string 9 Purple beads, 1 Red bead and 9 Purple beads on and go into the last high bead on Panel One. * Repeat around for 3rd 4th 5th and 6th panels to complete the 1st row of netting.

To begin the 2nd row of netting, pass needle through the 9 Purple beads and 1 Red bead on the first loop of the 1st row of netting. * Then string on 3 Red beads, 1 Beige bead and 3 Red beads. Pass needle through the central Red bead on the 1st row's next loop. * Repeat around to complete the 2nd row of netting.

To begin the 3rd row of netting, pass needle through the 3 Red beads and 1 Beige bead of the first loop of beads in the 2nd row to start the 3rd row. *Then string on 2 Beige beads, 1 Green bead and 2 Beige beads. Pass needle through the central Beige bead on the 2nd row's next loop. *Repeat around to complete the 3rd row of netting.

To begin the 4th row of netting, pass needle through the 2 Beige beads and 1 Green bead on the 3rd row's first loop. *Then string on 3 Green beads, 1 Red bead and 3 Green beads and pass needle through the central Green bead on the 3rd row's next loop. *Repeat around to complete the 4th row of netting.

To begin the 5th row of netting, pass needle through the 3 Green beads and 1 Red bead on the 4th row's first loop. *Then string 3 Red beads on and pass needle through the next loop's central Red bead. Then string on 3 Red beads and again pass needle through the next loop's central Red bead. *Repeat around to end of row. This is the last row of netting and will encircle the top of the ornament. If too much thread shows between these beads, you may need to add 4 Red beads, verses 3 Red beads in each space on the 5th row.

Pass the needle through all the beads on the 5th row to tighten and reinforce the top of the ornament cover.

To finish, sew the thread back through the netting and into a panel to secure it, trim the thread close to the beads.

Now you can add dangles or whatever your imagination has created.
