About the Author

Jenna Woginrich is a homesteader and the author of Barnheart, Chick Days, and Made from Scratch. She blogs at Cold Antler Farm, as well as Mother Earth News and The Huffington Post. A Pennsylvania native, she has made her home in the mountains of Tennessee, in northern Idaho, in rural Vermont, and most recently in upstate New York, where she lives with a flock of Scottish Blackface sheep, a border collie in training, chickens and geese, a hive of bees, a horse, and several amiable rabbits.

Photographer Mars Vilaubi chronicled the adventures of his three backyard hens from their first days out of the egg through their first days laying eggs in Chick Days. He lives in western Massachusetts.

I'd like to start by saying I really like how the book was formatted. Interdispursed in each chapter are great side comments like her own chick diaries during the stage being talked about, or definitions of common lingo, or even short stories of her experiances. All while walking you thru all the basics up to getting your first eggs. Detailed enough to help you feel confident, while still directing you where to go to get more info if needed. For instance, she talks about the basics of what is needed in a coop, but lists other resources to go to to help you figure out whats best for your situation. It helps make the book a quick and enjoyable read as well as being informative.
