Chick Flick by Deryn Warren

The funniest book about heartbreak you will ever read. Sometimes a single sentence can change your life. "There's been an accident." "We need to talk." Or, in the case of Sara, a mother of four getting ready for a dinner party she's hosting for her husband's boss, the almost offhand admission from her husband that he's having an affair.
Sara is a film director (when she can get the work), and when her life becomes overwhelming, she slips into a cinematic world in her head. The novel becomes a script with Sara its star - an action hero drop kicking the other woman, or crawling across a table at a dinner party to slash her husband's cheek. It's her mental escape when life runs off the rails. But soon her awkward, awful and often hilarious attempts to patch up the marriage make her real life feel something like a movie - one with a private detective, cold revenge, and eventually . . . handsome new leading men. Each chapter is named after one of the old films from the 40's and 50's - the ones where the villains are punished and everyone lives happily ever after. Soon Sara learns that Woody Allen's line, "life is - complicated" is more apt. As she is challenged by life, her taste in film becomes more contempory.
This look behind the scenes of a Hollywood marriage will make you cringe, laugh out loud and sometimes stop you on the page when you read about those horrible moments we know all too well - the first time you realize it's really over, the jealousy, the gut-crushing pain, and finally, the freedom that comes from knowing you can make it on your own.

I'm not the usual demographic that would go to see a "chick flick," much less read a book with the aforementioned title. However, when a friend gifted me Deryn Warren's latest magnum opus, demanding that I read it, my hesitation quickly evaporated as soon as I started reading. This is a funny, wise, biting satire on the disparities between Mars/Venus relationships, spiced up with the protagonist viewing her life as a movie, and all the connotations therein. A must-read for mature men and women who are looking for a helping of smarts with their laughs. Don't miss it!

A male perspective: I picked up this book out of curiosity and was hooked right away. Very interesting to see  the dynamics of a failing relationship from the woman's point of view. Many humorous events embedded in the truly tragic thread that leaves you rooting for the heroine.

What a fun read! Sara is a confident modern woman, enjoying her Hollywood marriage until the unthinkable happens... read with jaw-dropping fascination how she handles the numbing stress of betrayal while being a super-mom on the edge and pursuing a career in film making.  She manages with the help of friends and family to not go teetering off the cliff of self-doubt.  A heroine's journey with loads of laughs!

What a delightful story. I enjoyed every page of this surreal twist to a marriage gone amiss. A fun and insightful book about a woman's world turned upside down and having to literally regain her balance under some hysterical circumstances. Although it's title is chick flick, I as a man loved it. If there's any book you must read this spring Chick Flick is it!

SMART AND FUN Deryn Warren has a wonderful strong female voice in this page turner. I really enjoyed the book and the writer's rye smart view of the world. Sara, the main character, meets life's modern challenges with grace and humor, and inspires us all to keep going.

I really loved reading this book.  It's a humorous look at real life and the heartbreak of marriages that go south.  I loved the children and their relationship with their mom, the in-laws and the wonderfu escapes into revenge movies!  Going on vacation or just need a great escape, read this book!

Chick Flick is a great read. It keeps you going from the first sentence. It will make you laugh and cry and commiserate with several characters at once. Reading this book is a pleasure.
