Overview

The claymation flick "Chicken Run" -- the first full-length feature film from animators Nick Park and Peter Lord (of "Wallace & Gromit" fame) -- takes the animated feature to new heights, thanks to a voice-over cast including Mel Gibson and Miranda Richardson, and the sharp, comic score by composers John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams. Tracing and highlighting the often-comic action -- centering around a gang of chickens who desperately want to escape their farm home before being turned into chicken pies -- they offer up a score that’s also as poignant and dramatic as it is funny. "The Chickens Are Revolting" and "Lift Off," charged with plenty of tension-building horns and dazzling percussion, unironically invoke the wide-screen sweep of pieces by James Horner or John Williams; while funny flourishes, such as a chorus of kazoos squonking out the theme in "Main Titles," keep the tone from becoming too serious. A couple of noninstrumentals -- Dion’s bad boy classic "The Wanderer" and Ellis Hall’s swinging big-band homage to Louis Prima, "Flip, Flop, and Fly" -- flesh out the album. Don’t be fooled by the cartoon cover; this inventive, witty score will charm children and adults alike.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The original soundtrack to the critically acclaimed claymation hit Chicken Run is every bit as clever as the film itself, at once parodying and paying tribute to the dramatic, orchestral scores of films like The Great Escape and Stalag 17 (which are also paid tribute in the movie as well). From the martial, sweeping "Main Titles" to the climactic, victorious "Escape to Paradise," Chicken Run's soaring, symphonic pieces -- which were composed and arranged by John Powell and Harry Gregson-Willamson -- are an affectionate homage to the golden age of film music. A must for fans of the movie, as well as aficionados of great movie music in general.

Do not be fooled by the apparent appearance of a kids movie/soundtrack. Adults probably enjoyed the movie as much or more than the kids. This soundtrack, minus the singing and kazoos could go with any WWII action/adventure film. Very entertaining!
