Romance is supposed to be the spice of life. But Maxie Pierce is so done with bad relationships—well, almost. She just has to get rid of the latest loser, Roberto. Besides, she has more important things to worry about. Her daddy, Texas Jack Pierce, king of the chili cook-off circuit, has been missing for nearly six weeks now. In his place, she must team up with her irritating half sister, Sylvia, to promote the family business at the Taos Chili Showdown, to be judged by celebrity chef Carter Donnelly.
But when Maxie discovers Roberto’s body in the chef’s trailer—only hours after publicly breaking up with him while wearing a giant red chili pepper costume—she suddenly finds she’s the one in the spotlight as the police pepper her with questions. Now this Chili Chick needs to kick up the search to catch the real killer and get back to finding her father...

4 STARS I liked Chili Con Carnage. It was spicy hot with all the murders taking place. Maxie and her half sister Sylvia are always fighting. The suspense is good to the end. Their are lots of suspects. One thing I noticed the police did not seem to be doing much. You see them gather evidence and see them take a suspect in for the first murder and that's it. I like Maxie. Her life is a mess. She is trying to keep her father's business going and trying to find what happened to him. He is missing. She seems ditsy at first but shows later how much she has learned. Sylvia I have not cared for. But we really don't know that much about her. She is older and is willing to help keep her father's chili spices business going and following the tour. Their is a big group that follows the tour selling their products to different towns as they go. The girls when they were young would go around the tour with their father. When Maxie is worried about her sister Nick the security guard tells her to start thinking who the real murder is. He did expect her to actually go and investigate. Their are a lot of mystery about him. This is a fun clean cozy mystery. The first in the A Chili Cook-off Mystery. It can lead to eating chili with beans or no beans. I would like to see what happens next. I was given this book to read and asked to give honest review of it and be part of its book tour.

Kylie Logan begins a new cozy mystery series with a chili cook-off spin. The first book in the Chili Cook-Off mystery series, Chili Con Carnage introduces readers to the carnival atmosphere of the cook-off circuit, with it's eccentric denizens and eclectic personalities. Logan does a wonderful job with characterization. Bringing readers characters who are easy to identify with, while remaining fresh and interesting. Readers will find this culinary mystery full of just as many hot and spicy moments as the beans in the famous Hot Cha Palace chili! When it comes to mysteries, Logan certainly knows what she's doing. There are so many cozies today that focus on food in some way. That gives an author a real challenge in finding some form of the foodie culture to explore that will be new and refreshing. Logan has hit on an interesting concept with this series.  Cook-offs in general bring in a host of quirky characters, whether it's chili, barbecue or any other type of food. I think Logan is tapping a very entertaining area of food, that is almost reminiscent of the carnival culture. Where cook-off participants travel around to different shows and try to beat each other with the best recipes. Logan introduces readers to a behind the scenes look at what goes into this 'cook-off' mentality and how they make it work. I loved the idea and thought Logan did a great job of pulling it off and making it fun and realistic. Logan has a knack for characterization and that's really on display with this first in a series book. Logan has to not only introduce readers to the culture and the characters, but she also has to set up the series, create the back story and make these characters come alive for her readers. She does an impressive job with this book. Readers will be immediately drawn to the two half sisters who are forced to co-exist in on the chili cook-off circuit after their father disappears. I think Logan was going for an over-the-top cast of characters who are hot and sassy, and full of surprises. Maxie Pierce is definitely a firecracker. Chili Con Carnage is told from Maxie's point of view and the reader gets a sense of her hot tempered and passionate attitude right from the first page. I liked this character a lot. She had sass and determination, but she also had a softer side. She has had some trouble in her love life and it once again gets her in trouble in this mystery. I liked her interactions with her over-bearing half sister and the way she looked at life in general. She may not have anyone's first pick for a good amateur sleuth, but she pulls it off with style. Logan does a fantastic job with her and readers will fall in love with her saucy voice and spit fire attitude. The mystery aspect of the novel was well thought out and planned. Maxie is a sort of no nonsense character and her investigation proves that out. She asks a lot of questions and doesn't beat around the bush. I liked the fact that Logan goes a different direction with this one, but not having a strong police presence. Nick Falcone is a security guard, with a police background, but he isn't bogged down by rule and regulation and I think that helped him come across as a good back up for Maxie as well as a possible love interest. There were several red herring to throw the reader off and the initial suspects may not be who the reader would suspect. Overall a very well written mystery.

Maxie Pierce and her half-sister Sylvia are back on the Chili Cook Off circuit. Their daddy, Texas Jack Pierce, king of the chili cook-off circuit, has been missing for weeks. He has a bit of a reputation for chasing the ladies but to go off and leave The Palace in the hands of others is something her just wouldn’t do. People come from far and wide to buy his unique chili seasonings. Maxie was ready to leave Chicago but working side by side with Sylvia in the small quarters of the Palace and living together in an RV wad not what she really had in mind. She needs to find Jack and get the heck back to her own life as soon as possible. Then a dead body literally falls on top of her and her half sister is the prime suspect. She is also being watched because the dead guy happens to be a guy she had drinks with the night before and things didn’t end well. In fact they had a very public argument just a few hours before he died. She needs to turn up the heat and find the real killer before things get too hot and spicy to handle. Dollycas’s Thoughts First thing first, our family chili recipe includes beans and no hot peppers :) or pickles?? Now about this delightfully hot and spicy mystery, I loved it! Maxine is a fabulous character and Sylvia is truly something else. She is a woman with an ulterior motive who needs to be put in her place and Maxie is just the person to put here there. Maxie’s heart is in the right place but right now her life is a bit of a mess. Going forward this family dynamic could get to be quite volatile and I can’t wait. As they travel the circuit and hopefully a certain handsome security guard tags along you never know what could happen next. Family conflict will be almost as hot as the chili. There is quite a group of people that travel the circuit and we met a few in this installment. I am sure we will get to know them better and meet others as the series continues. In addition to introducing us to these fantastic characters Kylie Logan has plotted quite an interesting mystery with plenty of viable suspects. So many had means, motive and opportunity. This reader was surprised. Kylie you are off to a great start with this one! I am looking forward to the next stop on the Chili Cook Off Showdown tour. I know it will be another tasty treat!

Maxie Pierce has had her share of bad relationships. She just needs to get out of the last one with Roberto and start clean. She already has her hands full worrying about her dad, Texas Jack Pierce, who has been missing for almost six weeks. To make matter worse, since her dad is missing and is king of the chili cook-off circuit, she has to team up with her half sister, Sylvia, to promote the family business at the Taos Chili Showdown. But things go from bad to worse when Maxie finds Roberto’s dead body only hours after publicly breaking up with him. Now she’s in a hot seat and needs some answers before her goose is cooked. Author Kylie Logan has developed an intriguing cast of characters for this new mystery adventure. The characters are reminders of people you’d see daily. They’re likable and a bit quirky. The story flows smoothly and at a good pace keeping your attention. The plot is fun to follow as you track down the killer with Maxie and laugh as she maneuvers through her personal life. The detail descriptions of the area and activities places the reader in the middle of the action. Don’t be surprised when you have a sudden urge for chili while reading. CHILI CON CARNAGE is a delightful start to a fun new series sure to satisfy your reading appetite.
