This book is not haunting, erotic or deeply affecting. This novel is trying to tell you something, but lacks a tongue. It is a coming of age tale about a young man named Charley who goes gallavanting across Paris. Then his fascist friend Simon introduces him to a young whore named Lydia, she alters Charley's perception about life. Beyond this nothing else can be gained.

This is a great read if that's all you are looking for. There are no deep meanings, or reflective insight to be found. Charley's 'realization' is left to the reader and that give it a modicum of mastery, but look elsewhere for intellectual stimulation.

Great book. Good characters. Expertly written. Strong narrative style, typical of Maugham's best work. From the gentle but scathing desciption of the protagonist's parents and Simon, to the portrait of inter-war Paris and the interactions between Charley and Lydia, this book is a good read that stays with you for years after you've read it. In a good way.
