Modern Christian outfit Jars of Clay waited until the release of their 10th full-length effort to focus on Christmas. But “Christmas Songs” was worth the wait. The group offers up a few artfully-reworked covers into the mix such as "Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” and the traditional “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”", but many of the songs are originals that drive home that the band approached this fantastic project with purpose of their other acclaimed works.

First off, I have been a hard core lover of Jars all my life, but this is just sad. I'm so dissapointed! This isn't what I want to hear when I think Jars of Clay and Christmas music! I felt like I was listening to an odd edit of Jars and Blue Man Group. I don't know what they have been playing at but this is not pleasing. I'm sorry that they made a cd like this. I'm embarressed for them frankly. I didn't know Jars wanted to sound trippy, but they sure have made that a success. I'll love them for the rest of my life but I'll be listening to their oldies instead of this one. They need to go back to their roots. Godbless Jars of Clay!

I have been a JOC fan from the beginning and have enjoyed watching them experiment with a variety of styles in their music. This Christmas CD is a wonderful example of their versatility. It takes an exceptional musician to take something we have heard over and over again and creatively present something we want to hear again. They have done just that. I have all the Xmas CDs I need, but I found this one refreshing and sometimes haunting. Their unusual instrumentation goes far beyond framing carols in a rock genre. I heard somber, reverent, whimsical, warm romance and "catchy" in this album. It's difficult to characterize the Jars style with this addition to their productions - it's always an interesting surprise. This is one to buy.
