Absolutely fantastic book! Fabulous Christmas present for children! I have purchased 3 so far (2 for gifts). I wish there were more Mousekins' holiday books!!! I also purchased another of Maggie Smith's books, "Counting Our Way to Maine" and we adore that book as well. Beautiful illustrations, filled with humor.

I got this book 2 years ago for my then 3year old daughter. She and I loved it so much that I quickly bought 2 more for her little cousins & their families. I am surprised & disappointed by the Kirkus Review above, and I strongly disagree that the book is cluttered. Maggie Smith has created a delightful world to the exacting, adorable detail. The illustrations are gorgeous and invite children in to a world of charming detail. Every scene invokes one's own memories, and for children, instills an excitement about the traditions of Christmas & Winter that are not about shopping or getting presents. After pouring over this book (my child begged for it to be read nightly for about 3 months before we tapered off into 3-4 times/week bedtime reading :), my daughter asked for a watercolor set from Santa, she wanted to make me a Christmas present, she wanted to make presents for her cousins, she wanted to bake cookies together, she wanted hot cocoa every night and she wanted to go sledding. This enchantingly illustrated book & charming storyline make you wish you lived in the world of the Mousekins, and the author Maggie Smith gives you the recipes & craft directions to make these kinds of cherished memories with your own children, grandchildren, nieces, nephew and/or students! I cannot recommend this book enough to families with young children (I'd say ages 3 - 9 years). I wish Maggie Smith would write all kinds of Mousekins books! For example, Thanksgiving with the Mousekins, Easter with the Mousekins, Valentine's Day with the Mousekins, Camping with the Mousekins, Sailing with the Mousekins, Beach Day with the Mousekins, St. Patrick's Day with the Mousekins, Mother's Day with the Mousekins, etc., etc. And if Maggie Smith could retain the same exacting artistic attention to detail and the same exacting depiction of an entire season/day, she will have given the world of children's literature and countless families a gift. What I have taken away from this book is that Maggie Smith must understand that life is to be cherished, and that wonderful memories can/should be made and that the innocent wonder of childhood should be celebrated! One more thing: this story includes the importance of grandmother/grandparents and has generational appeal. My mother-in-law was inspired when she read this book, and when she came to visit for Christmas, she brought "surprises" in her bag just like the story. We made cookies just like in the story. We made hot chocolate just like in the story. And we are sooooooo happy that we did. My mother-in-law, my daughter's beloved "Gamma" died in March. My daughter is only 5 now, but she will have memories & pictures of our special activities that were taken directly from Maggie Smith's delightful story. Thank you Maggie Smith!
