Church and Societyby Alphonse P. Spilly (Editor), Joseph Louis Bernardin
As an outstanding pastor and leader in the U.S. Catholic hierarchy, Cardinal Bernardin made major contributions in several areas of the life of the Church. As a man of deep faith, who loved the Church, his insights in six particular areas are especially valuable to share with others: ecclesial vision and mission, evangelization, education, religion and spirituality, pastoral ministry, and pastoral outreach. While the contents of this volume do not cover these topics comprehensively, these selections are representative of many of the Cardinal's deepest convictions and most valuable insights. These are the works of a diligent pastor, not an intellectual or professional theologian. Readers will find his approach personal, down-to-earth, and practical.
Cardinal Bernardin was a voice of reason in an increasingly polarized world accustomed to sound bites and slogans. He was noted for the careful balance and nuance with which he approached the issues of peace-making, the need for a consistent ethic of life, religion and society, health care, Catholic-Jewish dialogue, and, near the very end of his life, the promotion of the Catholic Common Ground Initiative.
