Overview

Cicero’s speech De Domo Sua has been both praised and criticized as a composition. It is nevertheless of interest as a most passionate and personally charged plea by the orator on his return from exile in 57 BCE. The pater patriae had been banished by his political rivals the year before for his role in the execution of the Catilinarian conspirators without a trial in 63 BCE. His house had been destroyed and his land consecrated as religious property. Now it was Cicero’s time to speak up for his full compensation and restoration.

This edition presents the Latin text in Acceleration Reader format in order to help students to practice the particular acts of comprehension that establish reading mastery. The typographical isolation of chunks or units of meaning greatly supports a phrase-based approach to language acquisition. A convenient ereader version such as this can serve as an inexpensive, easily portable textbook for college courses, but its contents also offer all readers of the language an easy “on-ramp” to the classical Latin. Note: The Latin text is in the public domain, though its formatting as presented here is original and unique to this edition. Because the content is intended primarily for language-learning purposes, it is not recommended for advanced philological study. The length of this text is approximately 15,000 Latin words.
