Zoe Chambers paramedic and deputy coroner in the tight-knit rural Vance Township in Pennsylvania, has been privy to many secrets over the years, some of them her own. Secrets explode when a dead body is found in the abandoned car of the Township Board President. While a blizzard ranges Zoe and Police Chief Pete Adams launch the investigation to find the killer, uncovering secrets that could destroy them all. I loved this debut mystery by Annette Dashofy. Zoe was realistic and her friends (and not so much friends) jumped off the pages. I'm planning on reading the second book in this series when it comes out.

Zoe Chambers, paramedic and deputy coroner in rural Pennsylvania’s tight-knit Vance Township, has been privy to a number of local secrets over the years, some of them her own. But secrets become explosive when a dead body is found in the Township Board President’s abandoned car. As a January blizzard rages, Zoe and Police Chief Pete Adams launch a desperate search for the killer, even if it means uncovering secrets that could not only destroy Zoe and Pete, but also those closest to them. Dollycas’s Thoughts A great debut!!! This one grabbed me from the start. Zoe Chambers is such a multidimensional character. Her life has had many bumps in the road so far. Living in a small town she was able to keep a few secrets but after a dead body is found all her secrets come out and even land her on the suspect list. Her life intersects with basically the entire town and relationships are tested as the investigation continues and she learns she is not the only one with secrets. The supporting characters from Police Chief Pete Adams to Zoe’s friend Rose, along with Rose’s mother-in-law and teenage kids are all so strong and all play pivotal roles. The author has a very descriptive way of writing not only her characters, but also time and place. It was like watching a movie in my mind. I found the entire story very compelling and amazed myself at how quickly I read it. This book has all the elements of a cozy mystery but it has an edgier feel with some graphic detail but is does not reach the level of the suspense/thriller genre. I am excited to read Lost Legacy set to be released later this year. Dashofy has given us a wonderful start to what I hope is a very long series.

Zoe Chambers:EMT and deputy coroner, has always been a hometown girl, which in a small town means you might have and or run into secrets better kept unsaid. When one of the Town Supervisors is found dead in a car, some of those secrets could get a LOT if peiple, including Zoe herself, in big trouble. It's a great read (finished it in two sittings) that I didn't want to end. The reasons get a bit muddied in the mysteries, but keep reading because you want to. Loved the chemistry between Zie and her friends an her "enemies". Hopefully, this will be a long running series of an authentic new author! [Note: I recieved this book directly from the publisher as part of a launch day giveaway. In no way did the giveaway effect my opinion, which is 100% my own (the other part of the giveaway, however, in the form of a humengous coffee mug has raised my caffine level ;)]

$2.99, 200 pages. Only two minor curse words in the whole book. It reminded me of the TV show, Chicago Fire. The main character is a female, paramedic. This book is stand alone, very well edited and number one in a series of three books so far. While not a cozy, it is still not over the top violent and gory. There is child poronography and sexual abuse, attempted rapes, murders, some violence and animal abuse. The plot is full of very interesting twists and turns. I had whodunit narrowed down to three suspects, I was unsure which one to run with, and I was both right and wrong. The ending was a surprise. Because of the adult topics, this book is highly recommended for all mystery lovers ages 18 and up. AD

4 STARS I like Zoe Chambers. This had pretty good suspense. I guessed right on small parts and missed the big pictures by far. Boy was there plenty of drama. Plenty of suspects. Clean read. Plenty of secrets. Zoe Chambers is a paramedic in a small township. She rents have a house and takes care of the barn so she can keep her horse. Zoe was a party girl in high school and that still impacts her life today. A old boyfriend of hers married her best friend. Now he is murdered. She does not believe some of the rumors she is hearing about him. His wife is still her good friend. She is also close to his two teenagers. Because it is a small township the county is taken over the murder case. The local Police Chief Pete does not like that. Pete likes to flirt with Zoe. His secretary has been arrested for stealing a computer. It being a small town a lot of things cross with one another. I like Pete and Zoe and want them to start dating. They are keeping secrets from each other. The setting is Monongahela County, Pennsylvania. Lots of farm land. I did not want to put the book down until I had finished reading it. I want to read the next book in the series Lost Legacy and see how everyone is and what happens next for the town. I was given this ebook to read and in exchange asked to give a honest review of it by Netgalley and Henery Press. publication: March 25th 2014 by Henery Press 294 pages ISBN 9781940976006

While Dashofy has a really good story here, there are too many aspects that cannot be believed. There is absolutely no way a politician would treat constituents the way McBirney does due to the fact of needing votes for re-election. That is, in part, what the story hinges on, so it made the story too ridiculous from the first scene. Hopefully, this is better thought-out in future stories. Stephanie Clanahan

I enjoyed this audio book. Since Pittsburgh was my hometown I was curious about this series, it was fun hearing places and names I recognize. I love the character of Zoe, she is strong and likable. This story took me by surprise with who was murder and kept me guessing throughout. Just when I thought I knew who it was the story would take another twist, there were a few things that I did not see coming. I do have to admit I think that I might have liked it a little more just because I had a different voice in my head for a couple of the characters but don't let that stop you, it was still very entertaining to listen to. This was great to listen to on a long car trip, it made the time go much quicker. I will continue on with this series. There is some strong language in this book, not a lot but just a warning there is a little.

Another Debut I Should Have Read Sooner While I don’t always read all of the books nominated for the Agatha Awards each year, I do pay attention. After Annette Dashofy was nominated twice for her Zoe Chambers series, I decided I had to put the series on my to be read list. I finally dusted Circle of Influence off and read it, and it’s easy to see why this book was nominated for best first novel. Zoe Chambers is the assistant coroner and an ambulance paramedic in the small community of Vance, Pennsylvania. On one snowy January night, she parks her ambulance for a couple of hours to attend the local township’s board meeting. The meeting is filled with tension, mostly thanks to the antics of Jerry McBirney. Zoe has her own reasons for hating Jerry, but Jerry recently seems determined to anger the Bassi family, some of Zoe’s closest friends. After the meeting breaks up, Police Chief Pete Adams is called to check out an abandoned car, that of Jerry. When he arrives, he finds a dead body inside, and quickly calls Zoe to the scene. It isn’t long before the two are embroiled in a case that hits very close to home. What will they learn? Honestly, if you sat down to read this book not knowing it was a debut novel, you’d never guess. It is that polished. Take the weather. Yes, I’m starting with the weather. This is set in Pennsylvania in January, which means ice and snow. Without ever slowing the story down, I felt that cold weather while reading this book. What makes that even more remarkable is that this July here in Southern California, we’ve been experiencing record heat. The winter ice also makes a great metaphor for the plot. It slips and slides all over the place. You never know when you will hit a twist and spin around. I might have actually gasp at one of them. The climax is strong and perfectly logical. There is so much tension in this book it was almost impossible to put down, which explains why I was up later than I should have been finishing it. While the series is called the Zoe Chambers series, it really has two main characters – Zoe and Pete. We spend equal time with the two of them as our limited third person narrators. The author takes full advantage of that to build suspense and keep the pages turning. Much of the success of this book rests on how attached we get to the characters so quickly. They truly are that strong. In lesser hands, I don’t think I would have been pulled in like I was. Now make no mistake about it, this is not one of the light, cozy reads I tend toward. This is on the traditional end of the spectrum, and the subject matter is a little darker as a result. There’s still nothing too graphic here, it is traditional, after all. Discovering a wonderful series with multiple books already published is a mixed blessing. It means you have immediately added multiple books to your to be read list, but it also means you have many wonderful reads in front of you. That is definitely the case with Circle of Influence. If you haven’t started this series yet, don’t wait any longer. Once you’ve read it, you’ll be like me, looking forward to visiting Zoe and Pete again soon.

CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE is a thoroughly engaging read. Featuring diverse characters, an action-packed plot, and an intriguing mystery, the story kept me guessing until the end. I feel it's misclassified as a cozy, but those who don't mind heavier mysteries are sure to enjoy this one. Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in a giveaway.

One of the first things that I did was get angry at one of the characters…that’s good writing Murder, mayhem, and mystery abound in author Annette Dashofy’s fictional small Pennsylvania town in the dead of winter. Vance Township is an exciting microcosm of intrigue, and Dashofy captures all the emotion that attends entwined lives gone awry. Lies get in the way of love, and unrequited love becomes the wellspring of terrible crimes. Dashofy’s attention to detail makes places and characters come alive. The fifth book in this clever mystery series is scheduled to launch March 14, as protagonist / paramedic Zoe Chambers faces even more challenges

As usual Dashofy has penned an intriguing story of murder with a touch of romance. You will be caught up in the story from start to finish. Filled with twists and turns and characters that are so well developed you may be forgiven for thinking they are real. Along with a believable plot Circle of Influence is a real winner and the opening book for a great series.

The mystery went along smoothly. It wasnt filled boring info that had nothing to do with the story. I want to see a lot more of Zoe and Pete. Thanks for the good read.
