The True Mates series has its share of ups and downs, but with Claiming Shayla it seems Zena Wynn has found her stride. The book has everything we have come to know and love about the series: quirky characters, strong alphas, a complex shifter society, ever-lasting true love, but in this one she added even more suspense and quite a bit more sexual encounters. The story follows the mating of Rory, alpha of the Sparrowhawk pack, and Shayla, the human cousing to Keisha from the first book in the series True Mates. Almost all the characters from previous novels make an appearance, and we are introduced to some very interesting new secondary characters from the Sparrowhawks that add new possibilities for future stories. Rory and Shayla had a very bumpy beginning to their courtship, most of that happened during previous books, primarily Nikolai's Wolf. After a stormy first mating, Shayla runs from Rory, only to finds herself pregnant. She knows she needs to go back to him, and not just because of the baby. The truth is she loves him, but is very insecure about his love for her and hesitant to take the risk. Once the two get back together due to her attending her cousin's wedding, things progress very quickly. The two must learn to accept each other, live with each other, and get to know each other, while at the same time staying safe from enemies within the Sparrowhawk pack who are not happy with their mating. This plot moves quickly and as always the characters drive the story. I particularly enjoyed the scenes with Kian in them, and would very much like a novel with him as the hero to come out at some point soon. The one complaint I have is that at times the sex scenes interfered with the flow of the story. I know this is an erotic paranormal, and a major component of erotic paranormal romance are the sex scenes. However, in this particular story it could have actually done with a few less (it still would have had plenty!). It just seems that sometimes they were inserted in places where we really needed more actual conversations to help the plot move along. Still, that is a minor complaint and entirely a matter of personal opinion. What I can say for sure is that this is not a stand alone novel. So if you are interested in reading this one, you will need to read the previous novels to understand what is going on. There are too many references to previous novels and too many characters with significant roles that will not be familiar if you dive straight into this one first. The series also has an underlying Chrisitan theme that is subtle but still there, so if that is something that bothers you be aware of it beforehand. This book, as many others in the series, features an interracial couple (Shayla is African American and Japanese, while Rory is Caucasian of Irish ancestry). Bottom Line: Another strong installment in the True Mates series. It joins Mary and the Bear and Tameka's Smile as my favorite books by this author. I eagerly await future volumes and hope she continues giving stories in the same vein as this one.

I waited a LONG time for this book to be released. If you have enjoyed Zenas previous True Mates tales, you will enjoy this one.

I enjoyed this book. However, it could have been a little better, but I felt like there were way too many sex scenes. I would like to know what happened to McDougal and his woman. Did she really love him or just wanted to be an alpha fem. The story was a bit of a let down and i'm surprised it took her three years to write this book! I loved Rory and Shayla, but I didn't like the public sex scene. A little too much.

I have been patiently waiting for this novel to become available for my Nook, and I was not disappointed. I throughly enjoyed Rory and Shayla's story, but I agree with another poster's comments that their story would have been just as compelling with fewer "love scenes." At times the frequency of the encounters were unnecessary in my opinion, and they only served to distract the reader. Overall, I would highly recommend this book, and I too hope that Mrs.Wynn will consider developing stories for Caleb and Rory's brother!
