Clasicos de la Provincia

Pretty-boy soap opera star Carlos Vives wrought something of a revolution in consciousness, not only in Colombia but throughout Latin America, with this intelligent, joyful, and indelible collection of revamped vallenato music. Caught up in the kind of technicolor TV culture that Miami, USA, excels in exporting south -- based on a hierarchy of blue-eyed blonde looks and lowest-common-denominator blandness -- Colombia's music scene had relegated "country" music like vallenato to the poor barrios where a mostly black audience held them dear. That changed when Vives and his cheekbones arrived to reclaim this music as everyone's heritage. His noble sentiments are aided by a crack band (La Provincia) that recasts these chestnuts as rocking new classics. "La Gota Fría" especially carves a space in the often wimpy world of Latin American pop for rootsy, accordion-and-guitar-driven might. The ballad "Altos de Rosario" manages a gospel-vallenato hybrid. Vives gets bonus points for clearly identifying the vallenato heroes who inspired this wonderful work, from Alejo Durán to Freddy Molina to the legendary innovator Francisco el Hombre -- whose demonic accordion technique, as Colombian folklore has it, actually beat the Devil back into Hell.
