Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Laura Hummel
Who does Mr. Todhunter speak with behind a closed door? When opened he is found to be alone. He is indeed an enigma and because he wants to marry the landlady's daughter she has him investigated. Father Brown who has appeared in G.K. Chesterton's other stories solves the riddle through his knowledge of human nature. In another short story by the Baroness Orczy, a young woman is found murdered on the train. In "The Black Narcissus" the prize rare flower is the motive for murder and a novelist solves the puzzle. Five short mysteries are included in the collection and each one is absorbing, contains a colorful investigator and an unexpected twist. Readers should enjoy making their own deductions before the solution is unveiled. Each tale begins with an introduction to its author and a glossary is included. The stories selected are wonderful examples of the genre and would be perfect for a literature class. It would have been helpful if discussion or thought-provoking questions were included along with the text.
