Feng WHAT?

I once met a woman who set off traveling around the planet with little more than the ticket to her first destination in her pocket, but she had one extraordinary skill—the ability to read people's palms—and no matter where she went, she was never short of a place to sleep or food to eat. She would pick a local restaurant or hotel, meet the manager, and offer to do palm readings for guests in return for food, shelter, or a small wage. When I met her she had been doing this for three years, had already visited more than a dozen countries, and was having the time of her life.

I have found that Feng Shui has this same universal appeal. When people discover how much their home can affect them, for better or for worse, they are usually fascinated to learn more.

Feng Shui

The rising popularity of Feng Shui in recent years has been extraordinary. I first discovered a passion for working with energy in buildings in the late 1970s and began teaching Feng Shui publicly in 1993. When people asked me then what I did for a living and I told them, their usual response was a puzzled look and a "Feng WHAT?" Nowadays they usually nod wisely and the conversation simply glides on. Just about everyone seems to have heard something about it these days.

Feng Shui is the art of balancing and harmonizing the flow of natural energies in our surroundings to create beneficial effects in our lives. These natural energy flows were well known and understood by the ancients, and knowledge of them still exists in some cultures today. In Bali, for example, which is my home for half of each year, the people still live in total harmony with both the physical, seen world and the ethereal, unseen world of invisible energies. Daily offerings at every household shrine throughout the land and an endless procession of beautiful, powerful, and very highly evolved ceremonies in the island's twenty thousand communal temples ensures that balance and harmony is maintained. This, to me, is Feng Shui at its best—not just a set of principles applied to an individual building for a specific result but a whole island of 3 million people in tune with the sacredness of the land and living Feng Shui as a complete way of life.

My Approach to Feng Shui

My own approach to Feng Shui is rather different from that of other practitioners because I work directly with the energy of each space. Over a twenty-year period, I have developed the ability to see, hear, smell, taste, and sense energy in enhanced ways, so to begin a consultation the first thing I usually do is go around the entire inside perimeter of the building, taking an energy reading with my hands. The history of events is recorded in the walls and furniture in the form of subtle electromagnetic imprints, and through reading and interpreting these, I can detect pretty much everything of significance that has ever happened there. Traumatic or repetitive events are embedded the most deeply and have a correspondingly greater effect on present-day occupants. I am also able to find areas where the energy in the building has become stuck and determine what needs to be done to improve its flow.

Whenever I come across clutter, its energy field is unmistakable. It presents an obstacle to the flow of energy and has an unpleasant, sticky, unclean feel to it, as if I'm moving my hands through unseen cobwebs. This is what first made me realize that clutter causes problems in people's lives. It also has a distinctive, pervasive, musty odor that I can smell if I walk into someone's home, even if the clutter is hidden away from sight. Actually, if I tune in, I can also smell it in a person's aura (the energy field around the body) if he or she stands near me, because the aura becomes imbued with the smell of it. But don't worry about this if you ever meet me in person—there is so much clutter in the world that I don't tune in this way too often!

The good news is that after clearing clutter, this unwholesome, stagnant energy and accompanying odor quickly disappears.

The Feng Shui Bagua

One of the most interesting aspects of Feng Shui, and one that I will be focusing on a great deal in this book, is the Feng Shui "bagua" grid (see Chapter 8 for a simplified diagram and further information). This can be used to locate where each aspect of your life is found in any building you occupy.

For example, there is an area in your home to do with prosperity. Many people read about Feng Shui or attend a workshop on the subject, get very excited about it, and then rush to put it into practice without realizing they need to clear their clutter first. They hear they can hang a mirror in their prosperity corner to attract more wealth. But what if that area is cluttered with junk? Sadly, putting a mirror there is more likely to double their financial problems than resolve them.

This book focuses on just this one aspect of Feng Shui—clearing clutter—that is so vital to its successful application. It is the first book ever to explore this subject in depth in this context, and is intended as an ideal starter for those new to Feng Shui and an invaluable tool for those who have studied it for a while.

Throughout this book I refer mostly to applying the information around your home, but of course it can be used equally effectively in your workplace and any other building you occupy.

I bought this book and keep on reading it over and over. I was inspired with each page to get up and take care of some amount of clutter. The biggest a-hah moment was dealing with the mental clutter because as much as you can organize your home and clear clutter, the mental clutter is just as crucial. Enjoy it and i hope you are inspired just like i was.

This is one of my favorite books on clutter clearing. Very readable because it is organized in small manageable chapters and topic sections. The author's ideas about room flow, space, and energy make intuitive sense and are easy to apply. Ideas are both pragmatic and thoughtful. I learned to "see" clutter I had been missing and to think about some of the consequences of clutter that I hadn't considered before! This book also addresses the sometimes neglected topics of mental, emotional, and spiritual clutter.

CLEAR YOUR CLUTTER WITH FENG SHUI is a delightful how-to manual that helps clear out clutter in all areas of our homes, by addressing the underlying reasons that things tend to get so cluttered in the first place. As author Karen Kingston points out, 'clutter is stuck energy,' and she shares powerful insights as to why it is that some people get so attached to junk that it can literally overflow throughout the house, threatening the health, well-being, and sanity of those who live there. While the chapters on discovering various clutter proclivities is fascinating reading, my favorite part of CLEAR YOUR CLUTTER is using the feng shui bagua to determine which sections of the living area are most cluttered. Kingston explains that those most highly cluttered areas indicate which parts of one's life is being most sabotaged. Rather than baldly stating such potentially controversial points without supporting evidence, Kingston encourages us to see for ourselves what a difference the presence or absence of clutter has on our well-being. She suggests we pick an area in our lives that is not going as well as we would desire, and clear out the clutter in the corresponding part of the house in order to witness the positive results of this clearing for ourselves. From realistically assessing the clutter situation, to noting what effect the clutter is having, to finding the underlying clutter causes, to clearing the clutter away, I can think of no better single resource than CLEAR YOUR CLUTTER. Anyone wishing to find an inexpensive way to bring about radical, positive change in their life will benefit from reading CLEAR YOUR CLUTTER I give this book my highest recommendation!

This is a terrific book for people who need to be motivated to clear their clutter! Clutter removal is essential to rid your home or office of unwanted negative, stagnate energies. I'm a huge proponent of clearing clutter (and organizing the rest.) Once your home or office is free from clutter, the next step--creating a sanctuary in your home and manifesting your desires--is easy. So, if you overwhelmed with clutter, allow Karen to guide you! This book is wonderful. I have about 10 books on organzing and de-cluttering, however this book has a different approach that is unlike any other. It has a lot of valuable information and insight in this area. I highly reccommend it. Just recently my husband has started reading it, which is a big surprise to me. So, don't hesitate, buy it.I just ordered Karen Kingston's earlier book on Sacred Spaces and I look forward to reading this book as well.

This book is amazing. It delves into your inner psyche and explains why we hold on to our possessions. No other 'motivational' or feng shui book I've read has ever inspired me to actually act and 'practice what is preached', and immediately at that! This book is unique in that it relates feng shui and clutter-clearing not just to your home, but all aspects of your life (work, relationships, health, your physical and mental state, etc.) A worthwhile investment of just $10 that will change your life forever...

You truly get to the root of the why of clutter, and then you just know what to do about it. I reread this every 6 months or so for inspiration.

.....after reading this book, all I want to do now is clear up my clutter including other books on the same subject. While there are some aspects of the book that may not relate to you, most of the book is worth the money. So far, I've rid myself of enough clutter to hold two successful garage sales, cut my frivilous shopping by 75% and stopped being a slave to my house. I've shared this book with several friends and co-workers who ALL ended up buying the book..let the energy flow!!!!

This book is great. Really opens your eyes as to why we keep stuff and how to rethink both what we keep as well as how to keep it. I'm reading it my third time through as I've started to collect again, and need to be reminded of what it is all about.

Have read other books about getting rid of clutter (by Don Aslet) which were humorous and very motivating but this one is very different. I am completely devoted to the principles of Feng Shui now that I can better understand how my environment and energy really interconnect. I have gone through many great changes in my life by making minor adjustments in different parts of my house. I'm fairly conservative and not a new age kind of person, never a devoted fan of 'off the mainstream' way of thinking (at least not since growing up in the 60's)but I can't believe how well this philosophy works. Slowly abandoning my packrat days and starting to enjoy a house free of clutter! So hard to believe with a 4 year old underfoot and with both myself and my husband working full time. Feng Shui and clearing clutter has impacted so many aspects of my life. This book is a keeper! I highly recommend you get it now and get control of your life.

I didn't actually read the book, BUT I listened to the audio tape and all I can say, is it is just fantastic. Karen's voice is very soothing and relaxing, I listened to it while I was doing my daily chores and before I knew it, I was also decluttering. I just might use this tape while I drift off to sleep to store it more into my sub-conscious!! A must to listen to and read, now I WILL get the book!!!!!!!!!!

I highly recommend this book. It is one of those books that you devour in one sitting. I cannot stop cleaning and clearing the clutter in my home (and office) is amazing. I have a ton of energy and just feel great. This book has made a tremendous impact on my environment is so much prettier now and I just feel better.

Those of you in recovery should get this book, especially if you aren't able to do an inventory. After reading this book, you'll be 'cleaning house' real good, and for good reason. I'd personally have liked this book better if it had been condensed to half its length, which it easily could have been. Still, its message is profoundly simple, and truly works.

This book so motivated us that we're giving a talk on de-cluttering at our retreat house! Clutter can affect us spiritually as well as materially. Karen Kingston's book provides motivation, awareness and methods to de-clutter. I highly recommend it.

The most inspirational book I have ever read about something so simple as clutter. After reading the first chapter I was immediately energized to begin clearing my clutter. As soon as I cleared my home of clutter, good things began happening. I had a brighter, fresher outlook on each day because I did not feel weighed down by unimportant objects. This book helped me get organized and feel in control of everything. Such a wonderful and helpful book!

I thoroughly enjoyed Karen Kingstons book and found it an incredibly helpful guide to understanding Feng Shui and how the priniciples applied to my life. This easy to follow 'guide' book helped me declutter my life. I am now onto her next book. A must buy for someone who is interested in learning how to simplify their life and use the things around them more effectively

I loved this book - so inspired me that I'm buying copies for some of my favorite clutter collectors. I am clearing out spaces I have ignored for years! And it feels so GOOD! I can honestly tell that there is information in this book you can't get anywhere else (not to be vulgar but who else describes the perfect poop?!? Really.).

Little did I know that a friend passing this book on to me because it was 'interesting' that I would become so involved. I have cleared my clutter again and again and read 3 more books on the art of Feng Shui. What a great way to introduce this art of living and benefit at the same time by activating the elements in your home. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is 'stuck' in their lives for whatever reason. I have personally launched 3 people into Feng Shui since reading this book. I love it.

This was the first book I read on feng shui. It explains how your home (and office) and the contents in it can impact your success in life. There is very little feng shui jargon in the book so it is a great starting point if you are just getting started with feng shui. At the same time, the author has a depth of experience that makes this book interesting for people who have been studying feng shui for awhile.

I rediscovered this book last week while in the garage unpacking boxes and boxes of books. Standing in the midst of clutter, a book on clutter is highly appealing. Reading a subtitle that says "Free Yourself from Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Clutter Forever" speaks loudly. This is an interesting book whether you buy into Feng Shui or not. Kingston makes a lot of good points, particularly in the realm of why we accumulate things and what it says about us and what it does to us. She quickly identifies problems and issues and offers reasons why action is needed. One particularly striking image that continues to speak to me is one that appeared when I read Kingston describing how each piece of clutter, item or book, has a piece of string that attaches itself to us so that we eventually become enshrouded and wrapped in all the strings connecting us to our things. In the realm of books alone I am a very tied up individual. I keep seeing strings to everything around me now as I sit in my office or move through the house. It is giving me a lot to think about. I've found this to be a highly effective book and recommend it to all fellow clutterbugs.

After all the great reviews I was a bit disappointed by this book. There were some useful quotes and ways of thinking about why you have so much clutter but it was lacking in practical tips and it didn't quite make me want to jump up and declutter the house. Definitely has some information worth taking away and using but not as much as I had expected.
