Climate Change

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
It is only within the past few hundred years that humans have begun to chronicle changes to the climate, and yet geological evidence indicates that the earth has gone through hundreds of climate shifts, several as cataclysmic as the current climate change is forecasted to be. The present climate change has one major difference to the others: it is believed to be entirely due to human interference. For thousands of years, humans paid little attention to the environment or their impact on it. Changes made to the environment have far reaching consequences, many of which cannot be reversed. Jakab identifies five issues that are direct results of changes to the climate caused by human interference in the environment, from a decrease in the size of the ice caps to extreme heat, rising ocean levels, and more severe storms. Each issue identifies one area of the world where the impact is felt to an extreme degree. Full color illustrations, maps, and "Fast Facts" add detail to the text, which is part of the "Global Issues" series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
