Clinch Mountain Guitarby James Alan Shelton
A surprisingly banjo-heavy record (surprising in that the banjo is not played by Shelton), this nonetheless has its share of the pretty moments to which his fans have grown accustomed. A dreamy version of "Wildwood Flower" serves as a centerpiece (does anyone really get tired of hearing it?), with the rest of the tracks alternating between fast and slow tempos. There's lots of fine, relaxed playing here, but admittedly, Clinch Mountain Guitar feels a bit rushed -- 13 songs in under 27 minutes -- with more than half of the songs under the two-minute mark. Conclusion: An enjoyable if unremarkable slice of Shelton's catalog.
