About the Author

Dr. Sharad P. Paul holds senior academic positions in skin cancer and surgery at the universities of Queensland and Auckland. After residency training in general and plastic surgery, he is in full-time skin cancer practice. He is a Fellow of the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. He has received several commendations for his work in the field of cutaneous surgery and skin cancer surgery Dr Sharad P. Paul also holds a Masters in Medical Law and Ethics from the University of Glasgow, and in 2012 was a finalist for the 'New Zealander of the Year' award. Called 'Renaissance Man' by Canvas magazine, and 'Polymath' by Good magazine, Dr. Paul was named 'Open Heart Surgeon' by TIME magazine in 2008. Dr. Robert A. Norman is a board-certified dermatologist and family practitioner who has been in practice for over 25 years. He is a faculty member for five medical schools and has been honored with numerous service and teaching awards, including Physician of the Year (2005) and Distinguished Service Award (2007) in Hillsborough County, Tampa, Florida, Tampa Bay Medical Hero Award (2008), and the Haddasah Humanitarian Award (2012). He has been the editor and contributing writer of seven textbooks on Geriatrics and Geriatric Dermatology and published over 150 articles in various major media publications. Dr. Norman has a private practice and is the chief physician and owner of Dermatology Healthcare, founded in 1994, which delivers essential skin care services for nursing home patients. He provides many national and international lectures each year. He also has both MPH and MBA degrees and recently acquired the Doctor of Humane Letters after providing the commencement address at a major university.

Description: Visualizing and planning surgical repairs of excision defects is partly an artistic endeavor and partly experience. The authors show photographs of various skin defects and discuss an appropriate closure technique. The tissue geometry and healing and cosmetic advantages of a choice is discussed.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach dermatologists how to choose appropriate flaps and grafts for closing surgical defects from skin tumor removals.
Audience: The audience is dermatological surgeons.
Features: Not all of the cases illustrate a surgical conundrum. There are clinical cases showing how a misdiagnosis of a serious condition can be made. All the cases presented are accompanied by a detailed account of the treatment and clinical course of the patient. Teaching points are summarized and the particulars of a given tumor are emphasized. The book could have used more photos showing step by step how the flaps are rotated and moved into position. It is challenging for beginning surgeons to envision the steps of closure solely from looking at the defect and the closure photos.
Assessment: Readers can test their knowledge against the recommendations of the authors and see if they agree. There is something for everyone to learn in this book.
