About the Author

Gary McCleane, MD, is a practicing consultant in pain management in Northern Ireland. His interests include the use of cholecystokinin antagonists in pain management and the use of tricyclic antidepressants and topical analgesics. He has published a number of studies examining the analgesic effect of CCK antagonists, capsaicin, topical TCAs, and anti-epileptics, including gabapentin, lamotrigine, phenytoin, fosphenytoin, and the novel anti-epileptic SPM 927. He has published a number of review papers examining current options for the treatment of neuropathic pain and cholecystokinin antagonists in human pain management.

Howard Smith, MD, is Academic Director of Pain Management in the Department of Anesthesiology at Albany Medical College, Albany, New York. He has also served on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School as Director of Pain Medicine - Presbyterian University Hospital, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Director of Cancer Pain - Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, respectively. Dr. Smith also served as the Director of Pain Management and Director of Pain Fellowship at the Albany Medical College/Albany Medical Center Hospital. He is editor of the Journal of Neuropathic Pain & Symptom Palliation and the Journal of Cancer Pain & Symptom Palliation and is an editorial board member of the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Smith is the author of the forthcoming books Drugs for Pain and A Women's Guide to Ending Pain.
