Defenders in bridge base their strategy on declarer's bidding. Yet declarers often fail to return the compliment: they play without a thought of what the defenders have done. The problems in this book all contain situations where an astute declarer can listen to the bidding.

Pottage presents 60 hands. On each hand we are supposed to use the clues from the bidding to determine a line of play. Somtimes a bid will tell us that the normal line will fail, so we have to use the information to come up with something better. The hands are well chosen, although Pottage does not always explain his reasoning clearly. The book provides a useful look at the importance of remembering the bidding when choosing an approach as declarer.
