Much of this book's material can be found just as easily and for free in the documentation that comes with CodeIgniter. Some of the material in the second half of the book was useful to me, though it was offset to a large extent by some iffy material, including what to me appeared to be some rather poor implementation of OOP concepts. This book may be useful to intermediate PHP developers who are brand new to CodeIgniter, but I cannot recommend it to anyone with more experience with both.

I thought this book was appropriate for Beginner to Intermediate PHP coders. Among the better features were sections on MVC programming, PHP Style, Benchmarking (aka taking timing metrics), Input Validation and Security, Email, File Upload, Pagination, Session management, Database interaction and Active Record, User Authentication & Security, Tips on building a large-scale application and RESTful Web Services. The code samples were clean and minimal, and the text was easy to read. If I had one complaint, it would be that not enough text was given to fully explain many of the subject areas. Rather, the book served as a high-level introduction to the capabilities of CodeIgniter and a clear and small example of the current feature.
