Cold Case

Chapter One

"Officer down! Officer down!"

The panicked words echoed in my ears just as the shots had seconds before. My partner, Sam Scolari, dragged me toward the stairs out of the line of fire. My back hit the wall and we both fell.

"Anyone see the gunman?"

"What the hell happened?" came another shout.

I wasn't sure myself. We were on the second floor of the Twin Palms Motel, assisting Narcotics with a drug raid, on a case we hoped would lead to information on the homicide of Fiona Winchester, a woman killed at this very same motel. They, Narcotics, were on the first floor, and had made their arrest, while Scolari and I had gone up the stairs looking for evidence that might tie into Fiona Winchester's murder, as well as a case against suspected mob boss Nick Paolini. He owned this building. Supposedly ran drugs from it.

"Where the hell is the goddamned ambulance?" someone shouted.

The surge of adrenaline had drained me completely as Scolari and I supported each other in the stairwell of the dank motel. Armed officers rushed past us. One of them stopped.

I looked up to see a rookie female officer, her face paling as she stared at Scolari.

"What?" he asked her, his voice gruff. "You never seen a little blood before?"

I shook my head at him, wanted to tell him she'd probably never been in a shooting before. Never realized the emotional impact, the way it slowed and fragmented one's thoughts. But I turned, saw Scolari's face, white as the officer's. Saw the blood covering his raid jacket. My stomach roiled with nausea.

Scolari met my gaze. He tried to smile. "You okay, Kate?"

Yeah, I wanted to say, vaguely aware of a siren wailing. It grew louder, but strangely seemed farther away. "What about you?"

He didn't answer. I don't know if he heard me.

The female officer was speaking into her radio and I couldn't hear a sound.

I realized then what had happened.

Looked down, saw the blood spreading on my shoulder.

I was the officer down.

If you've read any of Robin's books, you need to run out and get this one. If you haven't read the the first three books in this series, you really need to start at the beginning and read them from first to last (Every Move She Makes, Fatal Truth, Deadly Legacy, then Cold Case) in order to get the full benefit of the nail-biting, hair-twisting, massive frustration the rest of us have endured. Not will Kate Gillespie and Mike Torrance survive, not will they figure out the case, not will they get the bad guys... but -- WILL THEY EVER, WELL, YOU KNOW!?!?!?!?!?! There's a great mystery in each one of Robin's books as a bonus. In COLD CASE, a three-year-old unsolved murder, in which Kate was shot, surfaces along with a bank robbery, another murder, more long-stemmed red roses, and a number of people in disguise. (not to mention that Kate has more than her share of Mocha Lattes!) So do Kate and Mike actually get together in this book? Does Robin finally give us the goods? Better pick it up and see. You'd hate to read the first three and then miss it when it finally happened, wouldn't you?

This is the fourth in a series involving Kate Gillespie and her partner, Rocky Markowski. Kate has been assigned to the Cold Case Files. They reopen a case from three years ago. A prostitute had been shot and killed at a sleazy place called the Twin Palms Motel. ................. An informant comes forward who seems to know more about the case than was released to the public. But just as they meet, a bank robbery occurs and the informant disappears. A body show up shortly afterward, but finding out the REAL identity is not an easy task. .................. *** Kate must put herself in the line of fire for answers in this mystery. In fact, she is involved in the mystery more than she knew at first. This mystery is not as good as the previous novels seemed to me, but it is well worth your time to check out. ***
