Bridget Cash is complex and driven in her new career as a homicide detective. Plagued by her mother's murder 20 years before and her missing father's presumed guilt, she makes allies and helps her murder squad target an elusive serial killer.

Bridgette Cash is a rookie detective, being trained by Detective Lance Hoffman, who's set for retirement in 3 months. What Bridgette is finding out is that Hoffman doesn't particularly like women, he's rude and overbearing and opinionated. The finding of a woman's body is Bridgette's first murder case. She believes this is the work of a serial killer. She only has to convince Hoffman and their supervisor. But no one seems to be listening. Feeling that this killer is not done, she's digging deep to find the evidence she needs to prevent another murder. No one has ever run up against a killer like this one. He plans and plans and rehearses... he never leaves a clue ... and he never takes anything with him he won't use. It takes the rookie cop to put together a profile and find something that everyone else has missed. It becomes very personal when the killer turns his attention to Bridgette.... Bridgette's father was a Homicide Detective. Twenty years ago, her father murdered her mother and then disappeared ... at least that is what is believed. Bridgette wants the truth about what happened .. only the police file is missing. Can Hoffman be trusted? He was friends with her father ... but does he know what really happened? and where her father went? The two story lines blend well together, but be forewarned. One of them reaches a semi-conclusion and the other is a cliff hanger. Books 2 and 3 are available now with more to come to the series. I like knowing I can continue without waiting for the next book to be published. This is action-packed with great characters. I like the interaction between Cash and Hoffman and how they slowly come together to work as a team. Many thanks to the author / Booksirens for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I started this book just before noon and couldn’t put it down. 10 hours later I am finished but wanting more. A fast paced, fast action murder mystery/police thriller.

I love police dramas. I don’t care whether I’m reading them or watching them. Seeing these brave men and women in action, who are the thin blue line that stands between us and total chaos, is awe inspiring. This book really makes me think of Castle. (Minus the bumbling writer love interest.) There’s also a strong Criminal Minds feel to the story as well. Rich with detail and multifaceted characters, this is a complex and sinister plot that keeps Bridgette and her fellow officers guessing. This reader included. The dramatic roller-coaster ride starts from the opening paragraphs and takes off at a brake-neck pace, pushing me through so many emotional states I was left breathless at the end. There’s also an over-arching conspiracy that’s not wrapped up in this book, but I’m desperate to learn more about.

Cold Comfort is a fast-paced, nonstop thriller. The author grabbed me immediately and did not let go until the final page. He held me in the palm of his hand with descriptive writing, many twists and turns, multi-plotting, and the vividly choreographed scenes. Each character is fully developed; from the self-serving Assistant Commissioner to the savvy, intelligent serial killer. Trevor Douglas' writing is fluid and flows smoothly. His portrayal of the crusty, socially clueless, seasoned detective, Lance Hoffman, is excellent. With retirement in less than three months, Hoffman has little time for social niceties. Watching Hoffman and Casseldhorf warm up to each other is a thing to behold. Including the compassionate, understanding, seasoned Chief Inspector, Felix Delray balanced the scales of tension between Hoffman and Casseldhorf. Then, the author added a self-serving obnoxious Assistant Commissioner of the Hartbourne Metropolitan Police, Leo Cunningham. What a stroke of genius; this added another layer of controversy and departmental jealousy to the storyline. Trevor Douglas gave Bridgette a background of a family torn apart by murder and accusation. He then added in a police conspiracy, which ramped up the plot. As she slowly learns more and more including the involvement of the police force, she is also on the trail of an intelligent, savvy, and prolific serial killer. For good measure, he threw in a jurisdictional take over by the FBI. However, Bridgette and the team are one step ahead of the Feds. I had a good laugh when Chief Delray -------, no that would be a spoiler. You can only get the scoop by reading Cold Comfort. MY OPINION: A multi-plotted intense and spine-tingling police procedural raised the hairs on my arms and chills ran down my spine. I found myself on the edge of my seat many times. Cold Comfort is one of the best procedurals I have read in some time. With a rich storyline and a variety of well-developed characters, I became involved in the story. Author Trevor Douglas evolved his characters and storyline with skill and finesse. He included an action-packed, dramatic ending; which left me craving the next book in this series. This series is addictive, and like most addictive things you can't stop with one. Move over police procedural authors; there's a new sheriff in town. The scenes are vivid and realistic; I could see each twist and turn, each character's conversation, and the working of Bridgette's genius, in my mind's eye. The scenes transition smoothly, and the writing is clear, easy to follow, and flows well. Exploring the mind and profiling a serial killer is fascinating, Trevor Douglas skillfully achieved both in this story. I found Bridgette's profiling of the motives and next move of the killer masterfully written. The intellect of the serial killer gave me chills. Trevor Douglas held the suspense and mystery at high peak throughout the story. Including the conspiracy of her mother's murder, the ongoing cover-up, and her father's disappearance, added another layer to this twisting tale. What did he know that someone in the Police Department did not want to be told? Douglas held and continued to hold this mystery close to his chest. I downloaded this book when free.
