Cole’s Perfect Puppy, by Frances Crossno, is an adorable children’s story about a young boy that wants to own his first puppy. This book is full of moral lesson’s, and does have religious undertones, but they are not overwhelming. Throughout the story, Cole makes friends, learns responsibility, and discovers what the meaning of sacrifice is. Cole gets a job when he discovers how much the puppy he wants cost in order to be able to buy Scarlet, the puppy, once he has earned enough money. Cole learns how to overcome less than ideal situations and learns to work hard for what he wants. All in all, it’s a super cute story. The author’s writing style flows well and the book is written at a level that children starting out with chapter books will be able to understand the language. The plot is well thought out, and the theme of the story is easy to understand. Being that this book is the first in a series, this is a great start to the story line. I would definitely recommend this to friends with young children, as I feel that it has great lessons and learning opportunities.

Cole's Perfect Puppy Review Rating: 5.0 Cole's Perfect Puppy is an adorable children's story about a boy named Cole and his love for a sheltered retriever. More than anything he wants to take Scarlet home and play fetch. The problem? Dogs are expensive, even with a reasonable discount. So, basically, Cole puts himself to work to earn enough money to buy the energetic pup of his dreams. He suffers challenges throughout his long journey of hard work, but he's an admirable little boy. He's going to do the work, and he's not going to complain about the choices he's made. Reading this story brightened my day. It's so nice to see an author write works of fiction that you just know are going to impact the lives of readers. It certainly made me want to be a more giving, honest, hard working individual, and I'm sure it'll have the same impact on you. This is a short, fast read for kids and adults alike!

Cole’s Perfect Puppy is the first in a series of books by Frances M. Crossno about perfect puppies. These are children’s books geared toward teaching children life lessons like friendship, lose, and God. This story though is set around Christmas and Cole’s desire for a puppy leads him to take steps toward that goal through hard work. However, despite the fact he works hard the baseline result of such a story always turns out in the main character’s favor. The pace happens within a few days so as the book starts the day before Christmas then moves along the following days. So it stays pretty steady, but it needs to be to keep the attention of a child. The cover is simple with a puppy on the front in a little Hawaiian shirt to add more of the cute factor of the puppy. So I can see it catching a kids eye or some one that had kids. The characters are pretty good, there is some background given on them which is told by the characters themselves. I did not even try to connect with the characters in this book, they are all children and did not find a need too. Part of what the book is suppose to do is to teach children about God, Sacrifice and so forth. The Sacrifice part was sort of there but the teaching about God was not. Anything pertaining to him when they did talk about it was done more like a statement than anything else. More like it was just in passing. This is a book geared toward children so it is for children and for that reason I would recommend it.

we really got a kick out of reading this book, “Cole’s Perfect Puppy” by Frances M. Crossno. There are fun adventures to be had, but also important life lessons to be learned. It is very creative and thinks outside the box as far as storylines for younger kids go, but it has some familiar favorite tropes that are sure to delight. While a few issues might be a tad too much for the real young ones, they will enjoy having the story read to them as well. I loved the characters and the energy and the dialogue the author uses. I know the ending wraps up nicely, but it also hopefully leaves the door open for more fun adventures. Can’t wait! Recommend for middle grade readers and Christian fiction.

4.5 stars What a charming and imaginative story with a wonderful ending! I loved this book and so did my 8-year-old daughter.(And of course now she wants both a pig and a puppy! Ha!) We liked the message of friendship and togetherness, and particularly the Scripture messages and reminding us of Jesus’s love for all of us, and our responsibility to animals. This was a fun, easy read that children will devour and read over and over again. Hope this continues on into a series (as it indicates it might)…

a sweet, fun and entertaining tale. “Cole’s Perfect Puppy” was captivating and heart-warming and with great messages. I liked that it wasn’t predictable at all (definitely surprised by the Christmas gift!) and while we enjoyed Dandy, it was Cole’s journey that really helped him grow as a character and one that is a great example for younger children. There are wonderful Bible passages and sections reminding us of Jesus’s love and our responsibility for animals and his creatures, big and small. Liked that we learned more about certain types of breeds as well. Thought the ending seemed almost a tad rushed and perhaps didn’t seem to fit as well with the rest of the tone of the book, but it did work out well in the end. Minor proofing issues, nothing terrible. Highly recommended for animal lovers of all ages, and all children at heart.

4.5 stars Clever, fast-paced, and included a lively characters (human and non) and some fun adventures and twists and turns, “Cole’s Perfect Puppy” is sure to please the young readers in your life with its energetic storyline and wonderful cast of puppies, piglets, and younger children. Crossno’s narrative and dialogue is engaging and easy to read, with only minor punctuation things on occasion that I noticed. This is also a great book for teaching children positive lessons and refers to scripture and is faith based, but that is not the main focus of the book. A terrific, fun read and we look forward to more adventures of Cole, Caleb, Scarlet and Dandy!

I thought this book by Frances Crossno was really special. It has that rare quality that lets the parent have a good time while reading a story with their child, or the child can read on his/her own and enjoy it themselves. The plot is very interesting and keeps you hooked from the first page to the last. And there is a fun and creative cast of characters that we just love and beautiful messages of love and loyalty and achieving goals, even when things appear dire or things don’t go your way. Also some deeper life lessons of love and loss. I’m happy to have found this author and cannot wait to get the rest of this books starring these sweet, spunky creatures! If there are more… hope so!(

3.5 stars as much as I enjoyed this fun children’s book from Frances Crossno, “Cole’s Perfect Puppy” and thought the characters and adorable animals were lovely, I feel it was a bit light on the overall tension in the beginning, yet the ending was almost too dramatic. There were scenes and conversations that I didn’t think really advanced the plot much (just filler) that could have been cut and helped with the pacing. At times the kids didn’t sound like kids (almost too stiff or formal), but other times was just fine. I do think that children will relate to Cole and like him, Caleb, Rachel, and their animals… With regards to teaching life lessons through the story, I was pretty impressed at how seamlessly the author worked in her positive messages, including Scripture passages. Overall it was a fun read, nevertheless, and we would read more from Frances Crossno.

my 9-year-old daughter loves all that is animals these days, so needless to say this book was a huge hit. The way the author brings not only the puppies (&pig), but the other characters to life, it is so genuine and real, and the story had much more depth and substance than I was expecting, which was a good thing and actually teaches several valuable lessons for children along the way. It felt very well-rounded, spiritual, and was time well spent reading it. A terrific addition to our book collection and we are eager to read more adventures of these delightful creatures.

I really thought this book by Frances M. Crossno was great. Showed lots of creativity and compassion and heart. Plus it was very funny and expressed completely different type of story than we are used to reading in our house. This is the first “Christian Fiction” book they’ve read as we are not a religious family, but we thought it was very nicely handled. The concepts are clear and the writing is clear and easy for young readers to understand. The writing was very appropriate for the targeted age group, and the lessons imparted are simply wonderful! Will happily read more from Frances Crossno soon. Recommended for ages 8 and older.

4.5 stars "Cole’s Perfect Puppy” by Frances Crossno is a fun, sweet book with an actual good plot (gasp!) and is quite easy to read for older children, but the younger ones might need some help. Right away we meet Cole (the story is told through his POV) and his brother Caleb. They like dogs and visit The Dog House and find love at first sight! But on Christmas it is not the ‘perfect puppy’ that they are hoping for, but a wonderful, troublesome creature names ‘Dandy” who throws everything off and creates fun drama and excitement. Cole is determined to get his puppy… can he do it despite the obstacles he must overcome? A great find with a wonderful Christian message, and we’ll definitely be reading this one again!

I am not ashamed to admit it, I'm 41 years old and I thought “Cole’s Perfect Puppy” (Perfect Puppies Book 1) was totally adorable. Love reading a book where the animals are the stars and just as big of characters as the people are. I was caught up in the entertaining and educational storyline and thought the writing was great – nice flow and good pacing with a positive spiritual message. Very descriptive and with great energy and spunk. I can't say enough good things about this book, do yourself a favor buy it! You'll smile and laugh and love it each time you read it, and your children will love it!

4.5 stars "Cole’s Perfect Puppy” is so fun, so fresh, so inspiring, and actually has a good plot! My kids were so invested in the outcome of Cole’s quest for Scarlet and the fate of the Dog House, and we loved the fact that characters (even the animals) all had such a sassy, fun personalities. Enjoyed Frances Crossno’s narrative ‘voice’, and for the most part the dialogue felt genuine and authentic enough (skewed a tad older at times, but not too badly) We read this one afternoon and hope it’s not too much longer before the other books like this are published. Looking forward to more fun adventures with the puppies!

I loved the book, and so did my 8 year old niece… We enjoyed the storyline and the characters, and the creative and imaginative world of Frances Crossno was a fun one to be a part of for a little while. The best part was how ‘real’ the book felt, from the depth (and problems) of the various characters, to not always getting exactly what you want and having to accept things and work to get what you want, to dealing with difficulties and finding faith throughout… I can see this being a book we’ll re-read over and over. A great add to any collection, as it is a timeless story that children and adults will love.

after reading so many books to my kids, and watching them lose interest after the first few pages, I began to think nothing would keep their interest from cover to cover...Until I read “Cole’s Perfect Puppy” with them.... Both kids were fascinated from the very first page, and had me re-read sections from time to time. This story is well-written and lively and appealing on many levels, from faith to friendship, and the love for (all) animals shines through. Interesting questions at the end to really help drive the message home and encourage deeper contemplation. And I love how it all wrapped up!

Cute book and easy to read. Great storyline with a underlying message of faith and spirituality that teaches God’s love for animals and our role as caretakers. I thought Frances Crossno’s writing had great flow and rhythm – the pacing is great to keep younger readers’ attention with the action and mischief and mayhem along the way. But this story also has important lessons and touching moments as well. Simple to understand concepts and words, and even a few that will have to be explained to the younger ones (this is a good thing). A great message for children and a fun read for adults as well.

"Cole’s Perfect Puppy” by Frances Crossno is such a cute story! This book is probably suited more for the 10 and up crowd, as there are longer sections of narrative text with deep themes/subjects that will be too much for real young readers (losing a parent, bankruptcy, etc…) But they will enjoy this wonderful story, and the animals (especially Scarlett and Dandy) are really charming! Don't miss this gem! It is a sure winner with the kiddos… a fun, adventuresome tale that gets them hoping for a happy turnout for all! Happy to see that Ms. Crossno plans on continuing with this series as this is just book 1 – ready for more!

I gave “Cole’s Perfect Puppy” by Frances M. Crossno a well-deserved 5 stars for 3 reasons: I am an animal lover and I will read all books about any animals (especially dogs) if possible. I appreciate the author's unique take on making this one more special, and not just being about a puppy, but also includes a different animal, and more importantly the brothers love and responsibility and faith, and then tying a plot neatly around it so that it makes sense and is actually interesting. 2nd is small children will like it because they enjoy animal stories, and they actually learn something about the breeds, but also it has life lessons (family, loss, sacrifice, faith) that aren’t just about dogs. And 3rd is because it is a lovely story that tells a positive message in a sweet, uplifting way. Thank you to the author for putting these all up together. Every child should have this book, and older readers will enjoy it too.

this book was a really fun and cute book about a pair of brothers who love dogs and hope to get the perfect puppy. On Christmas morning there is a special present not in the form of the puppy that Cole so desired, but an adorable piglet named Dandy Danny (“Dandy”). This was such an unexpectedly delightful book that has a good plot and great characters all whom learn and share life lessons. . Great storyline and the younger children will certainly enjoy reading this book, and learning the valuable life lessons. Minor typos here and there, nothing major. Great plot and a satisfying ending that will appeal to ages 8 and older.

I read this book with my kids to see what they would think of it, and I received very good feedback. They loved the story and the animals, and the friendship with the two boys and Rachel. While her story is sad, it also adds depth to the story, as well as what happens with the Dog House owner at the end – a bit deep for younger children but still valuable lessons learned. What I really appreciated were the positive messages throughout, from quoting Scripture to showing the value of perseverance, loyalty, love and family. Shorter chapters lend to the brisk pace that helps keep children’s attention. Some minor proofing things here and there (nothing terrible) and I thought could use without some of the needless chit-chat. But overall an enjoyable read that will appeal to ages 7-12.

what a wonderful story for those young ones in your life! Great for bedtime stories, or anytime, really. I like that it teaches children about compassion and caring, and helping others and also teaches God’s word, without being too heavy handed on the subject. The spiritual aspect is more of a compliment to the story than the main focus and I think it works very well that way. And it is also fun (and funny!). This book is sure to warm your heart at the end. Very enjoyable with lovely characters, from the children to the animals. Ready for more!

I loved this book! I thought it was great. So easy to get into right off the bat, and I really liked Frances Crossno’s writing style. The story flowed nicely, and you are pulled right into the action and world of the brothers Cole and Caleb right from the opening pages. They visit the Dog House and want a puppy, and when a ‘pet’ is delivered on Christmas morning they hope it’s the “perfect puppy’, but alas it is something different! But this just makes the story more fun and interesting to see what happens next, and some other characters we meet along the way to help the boys, like their friend Rachel. We were hooked from beginning to end and liked all the characters and the way the story played itself out. I’d love to read more from this author in the future.

"Cole’s Perfect Puppy” is a fun, fast read that is sure to delight! Really cute characters and animals and draws you in right away. Young readers will certainly love sinking their teeth into this one! It stands out to me in terms of originality, even if some elements are familiar for a children’s book- doesn’t seem like something we’ve read a million times before. I liked not only the Christian messages, but the life lessons as well. Ms. Crossno has her own unique voice and writing style that makes the story feel fresh and exciting. I definitely enjoyed the personalities of Cole, Caleb, and Rachel… and of course Dandy Danny and Scarlet… and the creativity of the whole story. The story flows from scene to scene effortlessly, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling for younger readers. Recommend!
ElizaBEB More than 1 year ago
for young reader/MG books, author voice is almost everything, and it will make or break a child’s enjoyment of it. They need to hear originality and know that the author is not trying to sound or write like someone else, but is telling the story in a whole new way, whatever that story may be in an engaging, authentic manner. Kids can smell a fake a mile away, and believe me I’ve read my fair share of books from authors who “try” to have the voice and personality, but fail. “Cole’s Perfect Puppy” delivers on all accounts in an impressive way. Very creative, charming, and great energy. The storylines were simple yet very relatable as most children would love to have their own puppy, and sometimes we don’t always get what we want. Has a nice hook, good characters with their own stories, and a strong moral at the end. A great read, and will be looking for the next one from Ms. Crossno. Recommend for ages 7 and up through adults (hey, I liked it too!).
