About the Author

Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus) (65 BC - 8 BC) was a leading Roman poet during the reign of Augustus. The son of a freed slave, Horace served with the army of Brutus during the civil wars following the assassination of Julius Caesar. After the victory of Octavian (Augustus), Horace was granted amnesty and managed to secure a position in the treasury, which allowed him to pursue his writing.
