Officially established in 1888, Collingswood was built on strong Christian values, as evidenced by its many houses of worship and its longstanding ban on serving or selling alcoholic beveragesa policy still in effect today. The town’s proximity to Camden and Philadelphia and a beautiful expansive park in the center of town helped to feed its early growth. In fact, at the beginning of the 20th century, town fathers proclaimed Collingswood “the fastest growing community east of the Mississippi River.” Collingswood chronicles the early development and remarkable growth up to the mid1900s of this southern New Jersey town through treasured images of the downtown district, church life, community affairs, government, streetscapes, Knight Park, and more.

It was a wonderful experience to look back to see Collingswood as it was 'back in the day.' As a resident of Collingswood for 25 years, I applaud the author for a superb presentation of the town's historical past.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a long-time Collingswood native, it was a wonderful trip down memory lane to see so many historic photos of all my favorite places in town. Anyone who has a connection to Collingswood will find something to treasure here. Kudos to the author for a well-researched thorough presentation of this town's rich history.
I was extremely pleased to see one of the legendary and often overlooked South Jersey towns finally being immortalized in print. Furthermore, who better to write about Collingswood then the youngest member of the Spavlik family, Janet. The Spavlik name has long been linked to the rich history and tradition of Collingswood. I hope one day Janet will be to Collingswood what Bruce has become for Freehold.
