I bought the first printing of this book, a quarter of a century ago and find it still useful. As women mature, their skin tone, eye and hair color soften. As a winter, now past 60, I find that I enjoy the icy colors more; although I still love black and white, along with most of my sharp, vivid colors. The day I embraced this book as my shopping guide was the day my closet stopped housing 'bargains' never worn. I also discovered that my colors in my closet just naturally coordinated, and over the years I have received many compliments for the way I look. 'You always look so great. How do you do it?' As a retired teacher, I have never spent the money that most of my friends have, I can assure you. And believe it or not, color does make a difference!
In my profession, it is very important to look great every day. Carole Jackson's Color Me Beautiful helps take the guesswork out of looking beautiful and saves money by eliminating 'expensive mistakes' from my wardrobe. I began recieving compliments the very first day I began using it. I also used it to choose clothing that looks great on my family members.
I bought this book second hand and enjoyed it throughly. After finding out what season I was and wearing those colors it gave me confidence to wear styles and clothing that I would not have ever tried other wise. Now I look at people and see how the don¿t look nice in what they are wearing. Some even look like they are sick. It is such a simple method improving your appearance, simply by the colors you choose the wear.
I have similar coloration to the author -- black hair, white skin. I have looked like a million bucks since I started wearing her recommended colors. I never look bad or sickly. Basically, I stay away from anything orange, brown, or ochre, or anything sickeningly sweet. I look good in black, white, pure and cool-toned colors It makes clothes shopping easy and enjoyable. The tips are also helpful for interior decorating. It can also help with buying clothes for a family member with different coloration, so that they can look good too. The fashion advice is kind of lame, since it was writen in the 70's. I also enjoy wearing casual clothing, which she say is wrong for my "type" ( But right for my lifestyle! )
If you already understand how colors work, you don't need this. In fact, you'll probably find the color palettes confining. I'm not sure it works all that well for people of color, either, although there are non-white models. It seems like people of color are pretty much limited to one or two of the four palettes. However, if you're light-skinned and clueless about color, this is a kind of "colors for dummies" book. Very useful, and has helped me immensely.
I remember using this when it first came out and I love it! It is so great to know which colors, etc. look best on me. I almost always wear my 'Spring' colors and usually get compliments when I do. Timeless beauty tips!
I bought the book @ a used book store, and it's an ok book even though it didn't help me that much, except that it told me what was going wrong with my makeup, so i passed it on to a friend, because she's like really into fashion and makeup and stuff, but there are people like me who can wear any colour, and there are others who feel they need to stick with their colours, but i still use the book when i go shopping and stuff so it must be okay
