Overview

Written by a Hollywood insider. Filled with POV drawing of the Cast & Crew. All the drawings may be colored in by you. "Trivia Questions" are sprinkled throughout the book. "Match Pictures" is a fun game. You have to see "What's Missing" from the top picture, then find its match. "Original Puzzles." is fun for the entire family. Here's the real scoop about Michael: He is (was) a Key grip with over a million years in the film industry. (Just check his IMDB Profile) He may have even sailed with Moses. (Check that, he get's sea sick on a pier.) Let's take a minute and examine his past: Actually did his first movie job in 1976 after spending eight years in the Marine Corps. He retired from the grip union local, #80, in 2013. (Whew, what an extensive background check!) Hey, did you know that he has eight other books for sale as well? (See them all on line) 1) Ink (Short stories) 2) Prose (His ramblings) 3) Grip Speak (Jargon used daily on set) (NEWEST BOOK) 5) Uva's Shorts (More stories) 6) Breaking into Hollywood! About the Author

Hello,

My name is Michael G. Uva. I am the author of the Grip Book, (Focal Press, Fifth Edition - ISBN: 9780415842372)

I was a Key/Dolly/Grip in the film industry for thirty-two years. I am now retired. (Oct 1, 2013)

I currently instruct (part-time) at different LA Colleges. (And I love it)

As an instructor I teach:

1) How to rig cameras on vehicles from cars, boats, to aircraft.
2) How to cut lights (flagging & shading) and make it look untreated.
3) How to get a job in the film and the next one and the next one after that.
4) How to safely operate a dolly or cranes & dollies.
5) Set etiquette.
6) How to become a confident, safe, and better film technician.

Resume:

30 years as a Key/Dolly/Grip
Local ITASE # 80 Union Member (Retired)
20 years as a part time Instructor

I have instructed at:

1) UCLA Extension Courses (Average an 8.7 out of 9 rating from students who have attended my courses.

2) Phoenix Film Commission

3) Cleveland Cuyahoga Collage

4) Bakersfield Film Commission

5) Albuquerque Film Commission

Note: I have also written a full "How to grip" curriculum, along with a 125-question test for students. As far as the test goes, I administer the first day of class and once again, (the same test) the last day of my classes. (Now the student knows exactly what they have learned.) It has been very effective.

Other books I have written:

1) Uva's Rigging Guide for Studio and Location (Focal Press, ISBN:
978-0240803920)

2) The Dollies, Cranes and Camera Heads Book (First Edition, I.C.T.V. 2009,
ISBN: 978-0-9620813-6-1)

Upcoming book: (Under Construction)
Current Title: 1,000 Rigs! (Good... Bad... Just plain ugly)

Notes:

I hold an Airframe & Power Plant Mechanic License. (Inactive)

I also hold an active and currently bonded California State Contractors License.

The reason I include these last two certifications is to show the reader that they can do or become filmmaker they want to be, if they really want it bad enough. All they have to do is have desire, be willing to learn all they can about the preferred craft, and have perseverance.

Will can and will be a Guest Speaker... just contact me through my book site.
