Insight and Understanding I have two friends who were in the military. For someone who has never lived that life it is difficult to understand the experiences, beliefs and challenges they bring home with them. One of my friends experienced several brutal combat missions that resulted in the death of many of his friends. I can only label him as “the walking wounded.” My other friend was on a peace keeping mission in Afghanistan, but was still under fire on an almost daily basis. They both are reluctant to talk about their experiences because they think that no one will truly understand what they have been through. “Combat Ready” by David Wolstenholm has provided me with much insight into the military experience. Wolstenhom details his journey from entry into the Marine Corps, through boot camp and military action, and finally home again. “Before I joined the Marines I was doing nothing with my life.” Wolstenholm joined the Marines because he desperately needed to get out of an increasingly toxic environment. If he had stayed, he probably would have ended up as a career criminal. Every person who joins the military does so for their own personal reasons, so In addition to his own story Wolstenholm weaves in the experiences of other combat veterans. He tells the story of his own life as well as the stories of fellow Marines. This really resonated with me because I could feel the pain and uncertainty these men went through. Throughout the book Wolstenholm talks about how his military service and experiences have made him a stronger Christian. He draws examples from the bible and draws parallels to all aspects of military life. He tells the story of what happened when he re-entered civilian life and the difference embracing Christianity made to him. I found the stories in “Combat Ready” compelling. They gave me better insight into the experiences of my two military friends. Movies and TV glorify military action. This book gives you an understanding of the emotional turmoil behind the action. In a nutshell, Wolstenholm focuses on the difference that being willing to “submit to a higher power” can make. I highly recommend this compelling story to the loved ones and friends of anyone who has been in or is currently in the military.

This short read should be advertised more throughout the military. For young service members who have not deployed to a hazard zone or combat zone but due to. The relation to the spiritual battle (believer in God or not) an individual experiences present or post combat experience is something that should be considered. 1stSgt Bryan Zickefoose told us (his rifle company) in the late summer of 2005, "Now, I am not trying to scare anyone here. But think about the reaction you as an individual might have if you have see one of us go down. You know yourself best. Be prepared for it mentally as best you can." (or something like that) He knew, it was good advice. If you are religious, I recommend striking chapter 6 at a minimum. Perfect read of a plane ride overseas or in transit for deployment.
