Come Away with Me

Although her debut, Come Away with Me, comes from the famed jazz label Blue Note, 22-year-old Norah Jones works at a crossroads of styles: She's partly pop, partly soul, and, yes, partly jazz. In a way, she's the younger sister of artists such as Cassandra Wilson, Holly Cole, and Madeleine Peyroux, singers who bring a jazz sensibility to pop melodies, and vice versa. Produced by the legendary Arif Mardin -- who worked with Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, and Laura Nyro -- Come Away with Me has an easygoing sophistication that belies Jones's age. A native of Texas, where she grew up studying jazz piano and voice, Jones ended up in New York, and recently she contributed vocals to Charlie Hunter's Songs from the Analog Playground, covering songs by Bryan Ferry and Nick Drake. On her own, Jones presents an understated confidence, both in her light and melodic piano playing and in her seductive and sensual voice. In a feat of alchemy, she transforms Hank Williams's honky-tonk classic "Cold Cold Heart" into a smoky ballad with a walking bass line. "Don't Know Why," written by her bass player, Jesse Harris, is a lovely folk-tinged melody that Jones sings slightly behind the beat. The melancholy "The Long Day Is Over," which Jones wrote with Harris, features shimmering guitar work from Bill Frisell. It adds up to an impressive debut, and Come Away with Me is an invitation that's hard to resist.

Just love this CD, this girl is going places. A voice you can listen to regardless what your taste in music is. Can't wait for her next CD to be released in Feb. I highly recommend this CD.

Listening to Norah on this CD was an emotional experience. I haven't been this stirred since I heard Eva Cassidy sing Over the Rainbow. I look forward to hearing more.

There aren't too many singers like Norah Jones, mixing a beautiful voice (and face) with a wonderfully melancholy bass and piano. Her eclectic musicianship soothed all my nerves throughout one sleepless night and after that, I slept like a newborn after breast feeding. She can imbue her music with her whole soul and then invite you into it. Not many modern singers-songwriters do that.

Norah has produced one great album with a wonderful cross section of songs. "Lonestar" and "Cold Cold Heart" sound like a lonely night with the wind blowing and the haunting sounds of "The Long Day is Over", all done with such feeling and moving music. A pure joy to listen to.

I read all the reviews here before I purchased the cd. I thought, how could they all be 5 stars? Well after listening, I can see why! Excellent CD. Her voice has such passion. I almost felt like I was sitting right there in the piano bar, getting lost in the music. I would recommend this to anyone. I just bought it tonight and have already listened to it 3 times.

Anyone wanting to hear sweet soft jazz, needs to buy this CD. Miss Norah Jones is an excellent artist, and despite her young age, this CD clearly demonstrates her timeless talents. She takes you back to the 70's with her voice, soul, and style with this work. Relaxing, soothing, and refreshing, this record is a MUST HAVE for ALL mature adults, as well as young people who can appreciate the birth of a talent in their generation. GO GET THIS RECORD!!!!!!

As a music manager for Barnes & Noble, I have the opportunity to hear so many different albums each year. With that in mind, it is rare that I get really excited over many albums. However, Norah Jones' is one of the exceptions. This cd is truly amazing. Her vocal talent and lyrical ability are outstanding. A must have for any music lover! Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Every time I hear her "Come away with me" and "Nightingale" - both Norah's compositions in the CD - I transcend to a higher level of consciousness. My 3rd favorite is "Lonestar". Norah is simply unique. It is difficult to decide which talent of hers is tops: her voice, playing piano or composing! The other night we attended a wonderful sitar performance of Anushka Shankar at Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. Any chance these sisters could one day perform together? Wouldn't it be another "East meets west"?

I just finished listening to this CD for the first time and WOW. I'm blown away. What a journey! No matter what kind of music your into, this is definitly a "must have" to add in your collection.

I first heard Don't Know Why while flipping through tv channels and hearing the wonderful piano and guitar notes on a soap opera. I stopped to listen and thoroughly enjoyed the montage of people meeting their partners with no speaking parts, just that wonderful voice singing in the background. Beautiful. Just had to find out who it was and what the song was called, so searched at Barnes and Noble. I'll go buy it tomorrow.

Norah has an incredible voice, great style. I have been listening since it arrived. The cd leans toward country, which I didn't expect. I hope she does a jazz recording next.

This CD is great especially to sleep to, or just to relax with a glass of wine. I love it.

With all of the no-talent "artists" being force-fed to us, Jones is a true talent that far exceeds any "copycat" artists such as John Mayer or any five piece male rock band that has a CD in the racks. She is a true original, and sings with emotion and a true sense of passion. Britney, Christina and Mariah should take a listen to this, and experience what a true singer is!

Norah jones is just the right singer with just the right songs to come out after what seemed like a musical drought following decades of surfeit in forgetable sounds.

An excellent composition of jazz and blues. Come Away With Me is an excellent CD.

The first time I listened to this CD, I fell in love with it. My favorite song is "a painter's song", every time I listen to it I see Van Gough's paintings of cafes, meadows and fields, and the infamous "Starry Night". The best way to enjoy this CD is to relax in a bubble bath with several candles lit around.
