Come Back Sweet Papa

The Grand Dominion Jazz Band, a top trad band, mixes together the British 1960s trad tradition with New Orleans jazz, and is comprised of Canadians (actually transplanted Brits) and Americans. Formed in 1982, the group's first recordings are on this easily enjoyable CD reissue. With a fine frontline (trumpeter Bob Jackson, clarinetist Gerry Green, and trombonist Jim Armstrong) and a swinging rhythm section (pianist Bob Pelland, banjoist Mike Cox, bassist Mike Duffy, and drummer Steve Joseph), the band digs into such 1920s tunes as "Flat Foot," "Mecca Flat Blues" (one of four songs with harmless vocals from band members), "Willie the Weeper," "Weary Blues," "Pontchartrain," and "Bogalusa Strut." The musicianship is excellent and the results are quite joyful. Easily recommended to trad and New Orleans revival collectors.
