Many times in sports a veteran player who's been just "going through the motions" finds himself getting traded to a different team. Often times that veteran will produce a career-high season with his new team, sending all the "nay-sayers" to the corner to proudly wear their dunce cap. I feel this was the case with Deep Purple & Tommy Bolin. Tommy needed a larger stage to show his goods. Ritchie Blackmore needed a fresh new playground to graze in. Exit Ritchie to life over the Rainbow. Enter Tommy Bolin. I'm convinced the guys in the band already dug his stuff & style because they gave him the invitation to join. I bet Ian, Jon, David & Glenn were energized with Tommy's presence. They got excited all over again! It's evident in the music on this lp. The guitar is funky & solid. The vocals & harmonies are rock solid! Too bad there weren't 3-4 more tunes on this collection. But we have what they gave us. People, remember one thing: this isn't "Machine Head" or "Who Do We Think We Are?" Ritchie Blackmore is not in this line-up. This is Deep Purple with Tommy Bolin on guitar. And that in itself sounds very interesting don't you think? C'mon,"Come Taste The Band".
