This slim volume has a number of attractive features. True to the publisher's name (Kids Can), it has five "TRY IT" handson activities that students can do at the middle school level. The activity dealing with the force of impact of asteroids of different densities is ingenious in its simplicity. (Density can be a difficult concept to grasp at that age.) The closeup photographs of asteroids are spectacular, especially that of the asteroid Ida with its minimoon.
A couple of problems mar the book. First, while most of the content is presented in a questionandanswer format, the reader is asked to think about only two questions (which are answered later). Second, although the volume is profusely illustrated, the pastel watercolor tones are not particularly eye catching. (from the Starting with Space Series.) Acceptable, Grades 58. REVIEWER: Ronald F.
