Comics Between the Panels by Steve Duin, Mike Richardson

This lavish volume takes an in-depth look at the history of comics in a manner decidedly unlike the dry timelines and profiles of most reference-style titles. Via alphabetical entries, the authors take an irreverent, often hilarious, behind-the-scenes look at creators, companies, characters, collectors, and conventions, pulling no punches when exposing some of the darker sides of the industry.
Containing countless stories gleaned from over 150 interviews of comics industry veterans, Comics Between the Panels is loaded with more than half a century of insider information on the talented and eccentric creators who forged the comics industry and art form.
Features 670 illustrations and photos — including dynamic and bizarre cover art compiled under such curious headings as Atomic Bombs, Death with Indignity, Gorillas, Headlights, Hooded Menaces, and Skulls.

Duin and Richardson have, in 'Comics: Between the Panels,' produced a fun and fascinating reference volume packed with literature and lore covering comics' entire galaxy, from well-known characters and creators to underground and little-known artists and series that had a significant impact on the industry. The work takes a distinctly anecdotal view of the comics world, focusing more on personal relationships between creators, comics folklore and legend(s), intellectual history of characters and artistic movements, and does not shy away from controversy, nor offering opinions. Those looking for a book concentrating on straight-up biographies and origin tales of characters and creators may be disappointed by this work - as mentioned above, it's the personal ideas and motivations behind the mask of the professional that drive this book and add to its verve. A worthy addition to any comic fan's or historian's shelf. Enjoy!
